Great Fishing in Alabama

Smith Lake is stocked with a large variety of fish such as, trout, large mouth bass, striped bass, small mouth bass, crappie, cat fish and many more not mentioned. According to the April 2007 electro fishing survey by fisheries biologists with the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division, Largemouth bass and spotted bass were captured at the same rate with 16% of the black bass population exceeding fifteen inches in length. Smith Lake also produces Monster striped bass which have been caught weighting over forty pounds. Some striped bass have been hooked that was believed to weigh more than forty pounds, but the line broke before the fish could be captured. With the use of a fish finder from http://www.deepwaterfishfinder.com these monster fish can be located and caught with a little skill.

Smith Lake is also the location where the Bassmaster Southern Open Tour 2 is held. It ended last Saturday with Andy Montgomery from Blacksbury, S.C. inching past Gerald Swindle of Warrier, AL. to win first place and taking home ,029. Montgomery’s total catch was 34 pounds and 9 ounces while Swindle’s total catch was 33 pounds even. There was a total of 179 anglers fish the tournament and 758 fish caught for a total weight of 1449 pounds 13 ounces.

With the amount of rain we’ve had lately, the water level is elevated to above normal levels which gives the large fish more area to hide. The trophy size large mouth bass stay in the deeper water where they are more secure and have an abundant supply of small fish to feed upon. A Garmin, Humminbird, Furuno or SI-TEX fish finder from

If you prefer bank fishing, Smith Lake has a good supply of areas where you can fish from the bank, but unless you find a bed of crappie or get lucky and find one of the younger fish hiding under the brush it might be difficult to get a good catch. I’ve only catch a few fish from the bank with the largest fish being a cat fish which weighed around a pound and a half. Most bass are caught from a boat and a good fish finder improves your chances of catching a good sized fish tremendously.

Your best chances with bank fishing is to fish for cat fish by using chicken liver and going early in the morning before the sun is up or going late in the evening as the sun is setting and after dark. Cat fish are bottom feeders and they tend to feed at night. Throw you bait in and let it sit on the bottom until the cat fish finds it and takes the bait. The key is to be ready to pull back on your line when your bait is taken. Sometimes it’s a long wait, but that is the disadvantage of fishing for cat fish.

All fishing takes some skill, but to me the more exciting fishing is bass fishing, because of the challenge of enticing the fish to take your bait. The use of a good fish finder greatly improves your chances of catching that trophy fish to put over your fireplace.
