Table Rock: The Cold and the Beautiful
Me and my friend Barry (Mr. Sparkly) had real good day jigging vertically (deep) with spoons for spotted *Kentucky* Bass on Table Rock Lake near Branson, MO. Got a lucky break with the weather, too!

Hey, BassCat, thanks for the info! I’ve only done the vertical jigging thing a few times down there but have to agree, those Hazie Dazie type jigs are great in that cold, cold water if you can find the shad. I live in Springfield and don’t go as often as that goofy “Mr. Sparkly” but he’s pretty much mastered the jigging/grubbing technique.
The 1/2 ounce spoon is made here locally and is under the name Hazie Dazie! I am from Branson West near Kimberling City and have to tell you those spoons are THE DEAL here on The Rock. Winkie Doodle, if you ever get back to Table Rock, look me up!
HLC…..Thanks, it was a light-hearted kind of video but we did do pretty well that day. Those jigs looked nearly identical to the shad they were feeding on; that was the secret. It always feels strange to a “bank hugger” to be jigging in 40-60′ of H2O.
Super vids, Great catch! Lots of info. Thanks!!
Bloose, thanks for the comments! We were using two different kinds of spoons. I was using the 3/8 oz. one with the red spot (see at 1:13); Barry a 1/2 oz with no spot. I got my spoons at a local tackle shop; they were just hanging there so I don’t know the brand. Barry’s came from Bass Pro; you can probably order on-line. Yes, they’d be GREAT for deep suspended bass. White bass, too!
awesome! always good to catch some bonus fish that you werent necessarily targeting like those crappie. what was the name of the spoons you were using? would they be good for suspended bass deep?
Thanks for commenting! Yes, they are feisty! Table Rock near Branson, MO (where this was filmed) rarely freezes over and we’ve caught some spots around 3 lb. or so. You can fish TR this time of year if you are crazy enough.
Spots are so fun to catch…..Its going to be March here before we can fish our lakes are froze….Whats some of the weight of the bigger spots you catch there??
I have never tried vertical jigging for bowfin. But I do see a lot of fish close to the bottom, similar to your video. I’m going have try the spoon method:)
Norm, thanks, glad you liked it! Have you ever vertical-jigged for bowfins?
That is great fishing show! 5*
Thanks BFinc! Understand completely. I’ve been out there in a gortex ski outfit and still froze….line freezes…..eyes on the rod freeze up and all that sort of fun. We got lucky with a “warm” day! Amazing thing is the darn fish bite really well if you can find the shad balls.
Ahh I can’t do that unless i cut a hole in the ice ,me and the cold dont mix ,Great Video And nice fish
KF, thanks for commenting! It was a very good day overall, plus a totally different style for a bank hugger like myself.
Ha! Obviously you caught the lyric….the fish were often right around stuff like that in 50-70′ of water (not in a trunk)!
looked like a good day of fishin
What you gonna do with all that junk?
Ryrford, thanks! 1). Oil is heating up. 2). Many have coveted a hat like that hat; very few get to experience its power. Just wear it into any bait shop or gas station and notice the instant respect and admiration it commands he-he-he!.
Keep kickin’ those crappie at Reelfoot!
Man put that crappie in the frying pan! Where can I get a hat like that? Great video.
Thanks DJ! I think they “shoot” shad on Table Rock because they have a belly full already. I hadn’t been fishing for quite some time so it was a fun outing.
Look out for that shad-shootin bass. You guys are having a good time!
