Tournament bass fishing as a coangler.?
I will be fishing a bass tournament as a co angler this weekend on Pickwick Lake.Got any ideas on what I need to throw at em?I will be fishing from the back of the boat and my boater may be bed fishing as they should be spawning now.My options will more than likely be limited to cruising bass that have,nt locked on to beds yet.I,ve never fished this lake before and would appreciate some insight to what they like best here.I,m thinking maybe swim jigs craws or topwaters.

If he is fishing ledges or flats, swimming jigs and single bladed spinnerbaits would work. If the bass are cruising, try wacky rigging a 4 or 5 inch senko. If they are on the beds try a lizard of a creature bait. If there is any type of vegetation, don’t count out throwing a crawfish lipless crankbait. Good luck!
Your first conversation needs to be with your angler. As likely as not he or she will have a plan. Consider using jigs or a finesse tactic like drop shotting….if the plan is too nest raid then, you will be in spots for extended periods instead of running and gunning.
That said if you do run and gun, you lipless crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and flat sided crankbaits.
Pickwick has a lot of Small Mouths…I really doubt he will be bed fishing…but if he is there is something I learned from being a Co-Angler for the past 8 years…you can always drag a Carolina Rig behind him or fan cast the area because there will still be beds you can not see…a Shaky Head worm will work also…but for the Small Mouths you want to use a Tube…Green Pumpkin or a Brown is a good choice of colors…what I always try to do is do something different than the boater…if he is fishing the same way I am, I will use a different color…the trick is to fish where he has not and to give them a different look…for example…i fished with a guy who was on some fish…the fish were on a primary then secondary river ledge…he was catching his fish by dragging a jig…so I drug a Carolina Rig in the same area…we both caught limits and were culling most of the day…another bit of advice I can give you is…for example if he is fishing a buzz bait, throw a weightless fluke…I have caught untold amounts of fish behind a guy throwing a buzz bait…like I said before the trick is to do something different…hope this helps…
EDIT: Sooner Ed…in the FLW Federation the No-Boater gets half the day to fish where they want and can use the trolling motor and be in the front of the boat for half the day….I never use the trolling motor unless I am asked to, but I do from time to time have spots I want to try and I get my boater to go there…I guess it also helps that in my club we have to give the boater, or at least offer them $30 for gas…I fish in the GA FLW BASS Federation…
Fisher King….what bass clubs have you been fishing in? I have never been in a club that made the boater give up the trolling motor to the non-boater. That’s crazy! Fishing the front of the boat and running the trolling motor is the responsibility of the boat owner. I would never fish in a club that told me I had to give up running my own boat. If a non-boater whines about fairness in my club….we would just tell him to go buy a bass boat, and then he could fish in the front all he wants! Anyway, I’m not at all questioning the validity of your statement, or meaning this to challenge what you said, I have honestly just never heard of such a thing. By the way, your advice was great! I may need to tap into that knowledge for my next tournament!!
You already got some good advice! Just glad to see people posting from the area. I like fishing Pickwick! Just don’t get their enough.
this weekend with the water temps at 57 slowrolling a spinnerbait 3/4 oz was the ticket.but when the water warmed up to 64 they moved up into bedding areas and the spinner wasnt so hot.I used a 3/8 oz jig with a salty grub craw fish colors and my brother used a shaky head and a 4” black worm we both caught fish.this was bedding fish in 1 to 6 feet deep in bedding areas in 1 to 2 feet deep i love the sinko and the sizmic toad for top water
all of those are good joices , but if there is grass present , try a 4″ fluke with just the tail dipped , wide gapped hook and a litle chartreuse dye on the tail and make long casts ahead of moving fish . You might be surprised .
