What information can you give me on operating a boat in the keys?

I live in the north and have a 25′ cruiser and bass boat but have not done any salt water boating. Are the channels and shallows well marked? I plan on Key Largo in Feb. to try to learn the fishing and boating in this area.

It is very shallow. Most of the nice places have anchorages you must use- no anchors of your own. Lots of protected wild life and rich people (not necessarily a good thing). The BIG boats go roaring thru the flats. You want to stay out of their way because if they go off plane some will ground.

The channels are best worked with a sat nav and good charts.
Found the people mostly friendly, and lots to do ashore.

Fishing is great, but you need to know your species as some you must throw back.

    Snorkeling is great too.

The salinity is very high and can cause problems if you have no way to flush out your engines. Open wiring that was no problem in fresh water may cause grief there.

You got great tips from William M.

The Keys and the water around the are very shallow.

Get yourself some very accurate charts and a GPS.

And some fish do have to go back, so knowing your species is also a very good tip.

The upside: the water is gin clear and the people are great.

    Have fun.
