When fishing at a dam is it better to fish above or below the dam? ?

I am curious, I am not a noobie to bass fishing but am near a dam that supposedly has some big bass, but I have not been successful (no boat to get real deep into the lake) so should I focus on above or below this dam that is connected to this larger lake?

I have always had the best of luck below the dam. I am an avid fisher. Most of the fish below have been there awhile because of the water rising and falling.
When fishing around a dam, for big bass, catfish,trout, or any other fish it is always better fishing down side of the dam. Place your boat in clam water and cast into the current of the river and let the flow of the river move your line down stream until you have very little slack in your line. When a fish it your line set your hook and have fun,because the fish will try to head to deep water. Have fun and Good fishing.

Below the dam because the fish wait for for food to get washed over, or past spill ways.
Fish below the dam. Try to stay out of the main current. Instead, try to fish current breaks, eddys, around rocks or obstructions. Fish will face into the current, so plan your casts to these areas accordingly.
Below the dam, with this exception: late winter/early spring, if the dam runs a generator. The water near the dam on the upstream side will be warm, and fish will congregate there.
I’ve had better luck for bass above the dam and catfish and trout below the dam.
