Can the Win98 registry be restored from the command prompt?

Hi everyone. I go through this all the time when I ask a Win98 question. It’s a garage machine, that I don’t have a legal copy of anything else for.

I installed an old game – Bass Masters Fishing – and when I went to reboot I got the old VxD error “You Must Run Windows Setup”. Safe Mode doesn’t work, Normal boot doesn’t work, line-by-line confirmation doesn’t work.

I have the registry prior to the install backed up and I can get the CDROM to work. Is there a way to restore the registry from the command prompt?

I did not save win.ini and system.ini, but in the future I will. I was going to try to restore the registry – if possible – before I do a complete reinstall.

Thanks!

  • Don M:

NO. Only a complete Format of the Hard Drive can repair the registry to factory fresh.

if you have a .reg file containing a registry backup, you might by accessing(merging) that registry file using command prompt.
