Carp or Catfisherman, do you think line is a BIG factor when fishing?
Now, when i carp or catfish i use anything. Zebco Ominflex or the cheapest line i can find that is available in 15 lb. test monofilament. Berkley Big Game is pretty in-expensive too, it’s one of the highest priced lines i use for catfishing and carp fishing.
What do you all think?
(May i add, when panfishing or bass fishing line is a MAJOR contributor in if i have a successful day on the water. Trilene is probably one of the best lines i have used when it comes to bass fishing.)
I see that everyone also has a different opinion on this Q. Hmmm … starting some drama aren’t I? I know line is important but not as important as a properly set drag. But i know for a FACT that line is more important in bass fishing because, bass fishing requires a lot of casts. Catfishing requires a cast every 10-15 minutes (For me.). Crappy line would hurt you more if you were bass, trout or panfishing which requires multiple casts in a period of time. That’s all i’m saying.
Bassplayer, that BBG is pretty good line. I use up to 20 lb. but settle at 15 lb. I just have never caught anything that big, the largest carp? 30 inches. Channel cat? 26 inches. I mean that carp probably weighed 15 but Ive never caught a fish bigger than those two.

i use 60lb trilene xt for catfishing and snagging.of course i fish for the big ones.when i go to the river i am targeting fish over 20lbs.and like i said, the river.there is lots of current, rocks, and debris.i ahve broke off 60lb line.not saying it was a monster fish, but i guess i had damage to my line.
now snagging……….whole different ballgame.there is so much torque and pressure applied to every component.heavy line is a must.most people use 80 or bigger.
Of course. Line is important for any type of fish I am fishing for. If you have crappy line you can have crappy fishing. Carp and catfish can get big and if you have too small of line or too old of line you have a high chance of losing that fish. Also, snags are very common while fishing for catfish and you can lose many hooks and bait from a broken line. Good luck fishin’!
Line is a BIG factor for NO MATTER WHAT you’re fishing for.
Line is a big factor. I would go with the best you can afford. You never know what is on the end of your line.
for carp, it’s very important to have a soft line as their mouths are very sensitive. at least on pressured fish. also some abrasion resistance would be recommended for their long runs if any brush is present. a very light braid of 6 to 12 lb would be ideal.
cats are less concerned about the line. they are fished for on trot lines with droppers up to 200 lb test. high abrasion resistance is a necessity for the snag infested waters of lakes and rivers and rocky bottoms of river channels they habituate.
since l don’t have much over 30 lb in my area (there are some, but not many), l do well with 30 lb berkley big game mono.
