in Fisherman’s Bass Club. I can’t catch any fish!?

I got the game Fisherman’s Bass Club for PS2 and I keep getting fish on my hook but I don’t know how to actually catch it and the instruction manual only says to jerk the line up but that’s for the fishing pole controller. can someone please tell me what to do?
