Yes and no. You need to contact your local fish and wildlife department. You may need to purchase a special permit. Some states yes, some states no. Some species yes, some no.
how would they find out? go for it, but you will have to keep a medicated tank of minnows also.
My thoughts exactly how is anybody going to find out unless you call and say hey I have a bass or a walleye in my fish tank. Just do it and don’t worry about it. That’s like going to the police and saying I’m selling drugs, but if you don’t tell anyone how are they going to know for sure if you are or not?
Um… yeah… as long as you don’t tell, but that better be the only illegal thing you’ve got going on, and you better be sure you don’t have any hardasses like me that come over to your house, because friends or not, I don’t deal with wildlife violations.
Here in Florida most species can be kept as tank fish ~as long as they’re legal keeping size~… you want a redfish in an aquarium? Go for it, it better be between 18 and 24 inches… and you can only keep the one… (which is why when I get my brackish water tank going, it’s all going to be unregulated species)
Check with your state’s Fish and Wildlife Commission or Department of Natural Resources or whatever you have to determine legality in your state.
