homemade freshwater largemouth bass bait recipes?

I’ve been fishing in this pond by my house for 2 years, and the fish in it are extremely stubborn and picky. The only thing i’ve really had luck with is hot dogs, but they’ve learned to stay away. So long story short, i need some homemade bass bait recipes that aren’t expensive and have been tested by actual fisherman like me.

    I’m with Trickem.

Have you tried a simple “shiner & float”? Or a nightcrawler?

Hotdogs are for grilling and eating!

I’m having my mornin’ cup of joe as I’m readingyour question, and I’m smiling @ the other folk’s reactions to your comment about hotdogs.
1st off, I haven’t seen anybody use hotdogs as bait since the 1st time I saw it back in the “60′s”, when we went to a place called Miller’s Beach, just outside of Owensboro, KY.
The man that owned the property, had bought some land that had been stripmined, and turned it into a weekend type of resort. Anywho, there were several small, deep, ponds that went with it, but on one pond there was a diving board that extended out into the middle of the pond. he walked out onto the end of the board & dropped a chunk of hotdog into the pond, and after about thirty seconds the water started swirling around, and the swirls were getting stronger with each passing second. Here is where I was about to get amazed, as held was holding a hotdog out at arms length, while standing fully upright on the board, (which was about 1 &1/2 – 2 ‘ off of the water, so it had to be a total of 7& 1/2′ or so,total.), the swirling started foaming and carrying on, then swoosh, a fountain of water, and catfish bigger than I was started leaping completely out of the water, jumping all the way up to retrieve the hotdog he was holding in his hand!!!
The show went on for about another 10 or 15 minutes, until he had used up two whole packages of hotdogs. I was dumbstruck, never before had I seen anything like it!! Talk about shock & awe!! The majority of these catfish were huge, stretching anywhere between 3′ and 5′ long! Even my Stepdad, was shocked! And his brother (Elmer) was impressed as well. And Me? I was scared stiff to go back into the water @ the beach (I was probably 6 yrs. old), until I saw the ‘old man go swimming, later that afternoon. Cousins Jimmy & Leroy would just tease me to no end, (of course they were 6-8 yrs. older than me), I just didn’t know any better.
Now here’s what I would do for the bass @ your place.
Take a Berkeley “Original” 10″ Power Bait worm, rig it bareback (weightless & weedless), stand 10′ – 15 ‘ off of any given corner, and toss it out there, (about the same distance from the bank) and let it sit for about 2,3, or 4 minutes without moving it around (this gives the bass a chance to get back after being spooked by the splash). If nothing starts after a few minutes of inactivity, and you’ve drawn up the slack, then start twitching the line with your free hand keeping tension on the line by raising your rodtip ever so… s l o w l y….(get the idea?), this method of deceit has worked consistently for me whenever the bass get wary of seeing the same old thing, time after time. In fact, it is the same method I use in early, early spring, from right after iceout, up until the spawning urges take precidence, a few weeks later.
    Goodluck & Good fishing
