Where Are the Fish?
The article focuses on the fishery life of San Miguel River in Colorado. The San Miguel is not the kind of river that attracts fly fishers from all over the world. Just ten years ago, one could spend a summer day on the San Miguel and count on catching a lot of fish, healthy rainbow and brown trout that one always returned to the stream, although fishing regulations don’t require that here. The drought has certainly taken a toll on the river, stressing the fish with lower water levels and higher temperatures. But that, by itself, would not explain the dramatic decline in fish population. Almost every turnout in the road along the river has a car parked in it, even on weekdays. Every car carries at least one fisherman, often with a hired guide taking him to the best spots. That wouldn’t necessarily be a fatal problem, but many of these folks don’t believe in catch and release, which guarantees that a beautiful game fish will return to the water to become fatter, smarter, and a credit to his species. But why should anyone care about the fate of one little river. Because it represents a host of pressures on rivers throughout the West.
