bass or freshwater salmon and trout depending on the fly used.
white fish, arctic grayling, trout, walleye
Fishing plugs are usually used for bass. Fly fishing for trout is great sport.
I fly fish for Bass here in my neck of the woods. I tie my own flies. Bass Bugs as they are called. Nothing better than tangling with a 5 LB bass on a fly rod.
Panfish, and crappie are fun too. Top water action, especially crappie is insane.. I have seen them barrel out the water after my fly.
you can flyfish for all species including saltwater
you target your species with the type of fly they might like-what type of bug do they eat?-when does it spawn?what time of day do they fly around ?etc….
Here in RI i’ve seen many 30#+ striped bass caught on flies. Not to mention bluefish, bonito and false albacore. These are all hard fighting saltwater fish.I know in florida they catch huge tarpon on flies. So to answer your question fly fishing isn’t limited to smaller fish as long as your equipment is up to the task at hand.
Any species of fish can be caught using fly fishing.
Not tried it myself, but it does get a mention in JOHN BAILEY’s COMPLETE GUIDE TO FLY FISHING (a very good book which I highly recommend to people interested in this form of fishing)…… so it is possible.
Fly Fishing is largely associated with trying to catch Salmon & Trout, and other members of the Salmonoid family…… also GRAYLING.
In Recent years, Fly fishing for Pike (Esox Lucius) has started to become popular.
But it can be used for catching practically any freshwater fish that feeds on Insects, though not alot of anglers (as far as I’m aware) pursue this technique…. gets a mention in an old fishing book I have from the 1960′s, but not many people actually do it.
There’s also SALTWATER Fly Fishing….. which is largely associated with catching BONEFISH off Tropical Beaches….. another form of fishing I’ve not tried, but I’ve read that when they hit your fly it’s one of the most awesome fishing experiences you can have, with the fish pulling your line almost to the end of the backing line within seconds.
And here’s a link to the book I mentioned if you or anyone else is interested in splashing out on a copy:

Elsewhere, then look up ISBN 1-84330-566-6
yes allot of different kinds of fish
Bass hit great early morning and evening on popping bugs, but will hit a few selected streamers.
I have also caught river bass of several species on small nymphs I usually use for trout, i.e. pheasant tail, prince, even on some caddis dries
To answer the second, you can catch almost anything on a fly rod.
