Fishing techniques and bait?
im planning on going fishing on Lake O’Dowd in shakopee minnesota this sunday and i need to know what kind of bait and “spray on scents” and fake baits are good at this time of year (early april) and what kind of technique i should use to catch fish off a peer/dock. there is sunny’s, crapies/panfish, bass, maybe some northerns and a few walleyes. and im using a spinning reel. im getting kinda tired of last summer when all i caught was little sunnys. im open to anything. what should i do/use?

most rapalas work for a wide variety of fish, you might also want to try power bait, maybe frogs also, they work later in the year, idk about right now but i cant see why not, the last thing i can really think off that has worked for me off a peer is leaches. well i hope my answer helped…
spinner baits or plastic worms should work bass and sometimes walleyes for crappie and panfish try 2 inch grubs maybe a chartruese or white alot of it is to experiment and see what works best once you find what they like you can catch lots of them and also try different locations too some areas have better fishing than others even try below the dam alot of time the fishing can be better there than the lake itself
The water in your area is still going to be relatively cold this time of year. So if you use artificial lures, make sure you work them slowly. I would recommend some type of jig lure like twister tails and add a minnow hooked through the lips to it. Cast smooth and easy so you don’t fling it off. Bounce it on the bottom and pause a long time between pulls and watch your line for twitches when the lure is falling because that is when you get a lot of strikes this time of year. Also, suspending jerkbaits work well for bass and walleyes in early spring and are less likely to get snagged. Again, pause a long time between pulls. And it is really hard to beat live bait under a float because fish are cold and not moving too fast. Minnows, shad or shiners, something that swims. Try different depths because fish can be just off the bottom or suspended or moving around in early spring. Don’t forget to invite me to the fish fry! Good luck.
For sunnies, crappies, and panfish all you need is a couple good lures. Now if you are just dropping the bait in front of the panfish and not casting, i would recommend a pop eye jig. They come in sizes from 1/64 oz.-1/8 oz., and i have had decent success with them in early spring. I were using a reel filled with 8 lb. test so i couldn’t really do nothing with the smallest ones, but i used the 1/16 oz. and have landed some bluegill & chubs. Here’s the exact color, size and brand that i use .. http://www.troutmagnet.com/store/chartreuse-116-popeye-jig-p-137.html
For bass a lot of lures are to choose from, first off i would begin with a spinnerbait. Which is one of my favorite lures of all time. Get a willow/colorado bladed spinnerbait by Strike King in white or sexy shad and it will do fine. Look for 1/4 oz. sizes which will catch all sizes of bass. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_73167____SearchResults The one in the display picture is what kind of blades i prefer. Another lure i would get would be the Cotton Cordell Super Spot. The 1/4 oz. size in the color wounded shad is great in all conditions. Here it is – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_73167____SearchResults
For Walleye, there is a crankbait by Cotton Cordell called the Wally Diver. It specifically is made for Walleye and should work well. Try the bright colors for walleye, http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_1860____SearchResults A good lure for the Pike would be the Daredevle 1/4 or 1/2 oz. in red & white pattern. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_2918____SearchResults
Here is Berkley Powerbait spray on attractant available in flavors aiming for crappie, walleye, trout, and bass. http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_15982____SearchResults It ain’t too hard on the wallet, either.
If you wanna use baits, worms will catch sunny’s, crappies, panfish, walleyes and bass, and minnows will catch crappies, walleye, bass, and northerns.
MINNOWS,they all love’em. good luck
