try the grey hackle its the best i think it works great!!! as for technique, many people have there special way of fishing, just be yourself and enjoy even if you don’t catch a bite, go find your rhythm. it’s a great sport. good luck.
try clouser minnows, lefty’s deceivers, poppers, leeches or most any fly that looks like a baitfish might work as well.
Kevin B @ http://www.kmdtackle.com has some great bass poppers ( Magnum Poppers) that are on point when it comes to bass fishing in Florida waters, Check ‘em out. You can also find alot of fly fishing flies and such that are perfect for Florida waters on his site for many native and non-native species. ~good luck catchin.’
Places like Bass Pro Shops and Walmart sell a lot of flies I would say depending on the area you are fishing you should be able to find something that resembles live insects.
Before i can recommend any flies you need to do the following when you reach the lake-it will save a lot of wasted time.
1. You need to find where the bass are feeding in the water-on the surface? just subsurface, deep almost on the bottom.
2. There are various flies designed to fish at these different levels in the water also you FLY LINE is VITAL- a WF(weight forward) floater will work fine, in about a 6-7wt depending on your rods rating.
3. Using a weighted fly like a woolly bugger will get down deep to the low lying fish- a tungsten head version will really make it sink.
4. Use a ready tied knotless tapered leader in about 9ft to help with your presentation and stop tangles. Depending on the fish and the size of flies, snags etc a 2-3X will work fine.
5. Great flies to take would be poppers- i dont like them myself as it seems to defeat the purpose of fly fishing, BUT they do catch bass- white and chartreuse works well. Woolly buggers are excellent too dark colors like green and black are great on overcast days, gold head versions add a good amount of flash.
OK, I love popping a fly for Bass. I generally fish rivers for smallmouth. They love topwater stuff. This is one technique that you will find useful for fishing poppers.
Here’s how to properly “POP” a popper for river bass.
Make your cast to a likely holding spot or at least a spot you have a good feeling about.
Point your rod directly at your fly. This will transmit all the energy of your stripping technique directly to your fly . If you fish it with an angle from your rod to the fly, most of the energy required to “POP” the fly will be lost in the bending action of your rod.
Find a cadence that feels right for the situation.( Slower on cooler days and faster on warm bright days) Mix it up til you find a pattern that works.
When the comes (and it will), it’s vitally important not to set the hook immediately. Wait until you feel the fishes weight on the line before you set the hook. This may take some getting used to, but, with experience, you will become proficient at it.
With small fish you cant just strip them in without reeling the line onto the reel. With larger fish, you will want to keep some pressure on the fish while you reel up the excess line in the water and fight it from the reel. The rest is up to you, your rod & reel, and the fish.
I tend to go with the Black, Minnow and Frog colors for darker days. For the Sunny days Minnow, and Yellow work well.
