Football Jig fishing tips?

Im an experienced bass fisherman and have used many many different baits although i’ve never threw a jig with the football head. I’ve heard on many occasions that these things won’t do well when fished in dense cover which seems a little weird to me. That’s what a jig is designed to do. Anyways any tips and advice would be appreciated.

  • Nathan S:

It is better suited for open/deep water and rocky situations, I have tried a football head jig in thick cover before and lost them. That football shape head does not move through thick cover to well.

    Nathan is correct, (thumbs bro).

Footballs are best used in rocky/woody structure. They tend to catch weeds super-easy, (at least that’s been my experience).

both nathan and FK are absolutely right on. the, uhh, l don’t rightly recollect just what they’re called right now… the pointy ones… work better in grass and brush. less of a tendency to hang up.
l just crawl my football jigs or give them short hops. the bass always seem to nail the hopped ones on the drop. at least for me. l also use as large a trailer as practical to slow the drop and give them the mouthful the seem to crave this time of year.
AND RATTLES. they must have a rattle. well, maybe not must, but l sure use and like ‘em.
my preference is 1/2 ounce jigs.

I won’t waste my Jigs (even if they’re those cheap BPS ones that I like) to very heavy brush. I will either cast it next to a lonely piece of brush (like a big stick or tree sticking out of the water) or in the middle of no where. I also use 1/2-ounce Jigs, my favorite being Bass Pro Shops’ brand, with a 3 or 4″ Chigger Craw trailer.
