ok i am a total beginer i’ve only fished twice and i didnt know what i was doing i got some bites but never cought it ok here is what i need help in what kind of rod should i get for a beginer like me i saw in walmart the zebco hawg seeker Fishing Combo with Bite Alert it looks good for only 40 bucks i need to know the kind of bait i need tips on how to catch the fish where to go and i fish i live in merced, CA in the 209 i want to mostly catch catfish or bass i also need the techniques and the hooks

You don’t need the hog seeker, try a little bit smaller rod to accompany you’re bass fishing needs, also. Since you are a beginner, i would go with a spincast reel & rod.
At Wal-Mart, you can buy this combo which is pretty good for the beginner fisherman, It’s the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Steel 10 Spincast combo – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_74130____SearchResults
Another “honorable mention” would be the Zebco 33 combo, i love this rod and reel – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_101075____SearchResults
Those will be good for both channel catfish and bass.
Happy fishing.
Ok, 1st off, good choice of beginner rod. If u want to catch a catfish in CA, then here’s some tips. First, always use night crawlers, they sell em in walmart, they r big worms. If u cant find any at store, water ur grass at 4pm and at around 10pm, they will probably be on ur grass. It is a good trick. Definitely use size 6 hooks, ask a walmart person and they’ll help u find em. Second, make sure u fish for catfish at around 6pm or later. Third off, leave ur bait in the water for about 30 minutes, moving it about 2 inches closer every 5 minutes. I caught a 33 pound cattie using this technique.
For bass u still need to use night crawlers, and anywhere from a size 4 to 8 hook. With bass, u should us a bobber about 4 feet above the bait u use. Then, reel in about 6″ every 2 minutes or so, then u should get a bite. The biggest bass i caught was a 18lb large mouth bass.
Hopefully u go out there and catch a big 1
Zebco quality has diminished a lot over the years, once the Zeb 33 was a good beginner reel, now the case will break, the gears fall apart, the internal line bail fails to successfully spool the line (tangles galor)
IMOHO….try a spinning reel, the type that hangs under the rod, you use one finger to hold the line, flip the bail over and cast, simple as 1-2-3….the function of spinning reels over “spin-cast” versions such as Zebco, are simpler and far more dependable
Finally, avoid bass supermarkets, way too$$$$$, I prefer to shop garage sales where I find equipment that shows it’s dependability at lower $$$$, (also you can talk to the owner who usually shares some useful information about fishing and lore) which is valuable
The weblink is a supermarket, but it does have a nice photo of an excelelnt reel for less then $30 new
> Below is a’ link that’ll give you some good info., on startin’ out with fishin’, plus more ~ trust me
. Also have included one for various fishin’ knots you’ll want to become familiar with. Zebco be a’ decent brand name when it comes ta’ startin out and think a’ Spincast rod/reel combo would be your best bet ie., much easier with the casting of the reel (the “Bite Alert” is somethin’ that’d be your own preference ~ honestly think you could do without). Once ya’ get the hang of it (fishin’) then you may want may ta’ go with a’ Spinning and or Baitcasting rig…
> Places ta’ fish ~ there’s Lake McClure (Bass, Trout, Crappie and Cats), Lake McSwain ( trout ~ Rainbow, Brown and Brook), Lake Yosemite (planted/stocked Trout, Bass and Carp), Bear Creek can sonetimes produce, providin’ the angler knows it, h _ _ l even your small canals support fish that sneak out from the lakes when irrigatin’ begins (April).
> Don’t know if I’ve helped but, ya’ never know, we just might cross paths on the Merced River outta’ Snelling (fish it quite a’ bit when not doin’ Steelhead and Salmon on the Trinity (Redding/Lewiston);)…< ' ( (( > < Fundamentals on fishin':
