how do i catch bass feeding on shad?
saw a bunch of bass jumping out of the water chasing shad but i didnt know how to catch them. im new to bass fishing so i didnt know what lure to use. i tried worms right over the areas where the bass jumped. i also tried a buzzbait and a jig. someone told me to use a jerk shad but i didnt know how to rig one. any tips?

put the shad on your hook
how about netting some of those shad and use them fly-lining with a spinning outfit ( small hook, light line, no weight ).
or just snag the shad and just toss it right out.
I would use a lipless crankbait like a Rat-L-Trap. Throw past the school of bass and reel through. A jerk shad I would Texas rig on a off set worm hook with no weight and allow it to free fall in the school of shad. A tip though is when bass school the larger fish tend to hang near bottom of school and allow the younger bass to wound shad and when they sink to bottom they feed on them.
Don’t use any weights and just rig the soft plastic offline. This will create a darting motion that of an injure shad and will drive bass crazy. Bass are opportunists and will most like strike at the vulnerable and injured rather than the strong and healthy.
Where are the shad? on the surface…so jigs and worms which usually used on the bottom and do’t look like shad.
Use a top water lure like a rebel pop-R in silver.
or a twitch bait like a rapala in liek an f-9 silver.
or an in-line spinner like a panther martin..particularly for spots.
a fast retieved spinner bait etc….
white or silver or grey……as close to the same size.
If the bass are chasing shad on the water’s surface as you stated above, then buzzbaits and poppers are good choices. If you can tell what color the shad are, use the closest color models to them that you have. Matching the hatch increases your chances exponentially. Also, a Rat-L-Trap or other lipless crankbait ripped through the school is DEADLY. There was a shad run at my local lake during the fall of 2007 and all I threw was Rat-L-Traps in chrome and blue and I’d rip ‘em right through the schools and where I saw bass busting the surface. It was nothing for me to catch 20-25 bass a day. If they don’t bite, vary your retrieve, lure selection/color, and size until the fish let you know that they’re satisfied. =) Hope this helps! Happy fishing and tight lines!!
use something that looks like shad or just use shad.if their jumping use a top water lure
I’d use a soft-jerk shad matching the size and color of the shad the bass were feeding on.
Look up how to rig-it.
any top water lure or rat l trap either one works great
It’s a bass fisherman’s dream to catch the bass schooling on shad. Some times you can fill up the ice chest and they will hit every time they come to the top and start striking the shad. But for some reason there are times when they will hit absolutely nothing you throw at them, but yet create a storm on the water as they attack the shad. I suspect that you had one of those days when they would hit nothing you threw at them. But just keep trying, because the next time they start schooling up and you are lucky enough to be there, they may hit any lure you throw at them. Here is some advice.Bass will sometimes school in the same area most of the summer. Check out the area they were in every time you go fishing. It will pay off for you good luck!
