Crappies are the biggest non-bass in the sunfish family and they can be found in all the continental states. Crappies can see colors well. They rely heavily on vision for hunting. The colder the temperature the better the fish can see. Young crappies feed on insects, while older ones feed more on baitfish and minnows. Crappies will also eat worms, maggots and crustaceans.

Crappies are school fish and can be caught by still-fishing, casting, trolling or drifting. In early spring before the spawn, crappie form tight schools that chase baitfish around the lake, particularly in or near structure. Then they begin to seek out water that is good for nesting. Like all sunfish, crappie spawn in the spring to early summer in still or slow water, making depressions in the dirt for their nests. They often build nests close together in large groups, so it is best to catch crappie during spawning time. During the fall, crappie bunch up into tight schools again and can be found near good cover all around the lake. This tight school behavior continues until the winter.

Crappies like to swim in schools and they stay suspended. You can usually locate them on the edge of weed lines and rock piles. They like to swim in schools on the edge drop offs from shallow water to deep water.

After locating the proper structure you will need to rig a minnow and jig. Take note that crappies tend to be suspended, so place your bait halfway between the bottom and the top of the water. Raise and drop the minnows above the crappies, this will entice them to bite the bait. Their eyes are located on top of their head. Always make sure that your bait presentation is above them. Make sure to make your line tight when you lift and drop it because crappies tend to bite on the drop.
