Salt water fishing tips?
Yesterday was my first day fishing and we were on a dock on cali. coast around sunset… using frozen squid.
I only caught 1 spotted bass (?) and kept hooking stingrays….
how can I keep from getting stingrays and get more fish!?
Is this good bait?

Well…I don’t really know how not to get stingrays cause they like squid but squid is a good bait for where u r fishin’.
Try fishing of the bottom.
Us a long leader for you sinker.
Hope this helps Flakes
Usually the only sizeable fish near piers are rays and sand sharks. They do tend to bite better after dark, but you can get them in the daytime as well. Otherwise on the bottom near piers you’re likely to get “tomcod” (white croaker), or occasionally small bass or halibut. With whole squid, the smaller fish won’t bother you much, which leaves the rays.
To get other fish, like perch, fish up off the bottom and near the pilings, with small cut squid. These fish may only be six inches long, but they’re pretty good eating. You can also use shrimp, mussel, or frozen or salted anchovies for bait.
In the later summer, you can sometimes catch bonito off piers using live anchovies, but that really depends a lot on the location (and the availability of live bait).
In general, though, there’s not much in the way of good-sized fish around piers other than what you’ve been getting. You’ll do better if you get on a fishing boat for a half-day (or longer) run.
I agree with Peter only to add maybe trying some nice saltwater spoons, the rays will probably leave the spoons alone.
If you want to know just about anything to do with fishing, then this website is one of the best I have seen. Loads of good articles which you can read or listen to.
I seem to recall that they also offer a very good free report as well. It’s well worth paying them a visit at http://www.fishinginformationguide.com . I would be interested in hearing what you think.
