Tips for a dedicated bass/inshore fisherman In Louisiana who can’t afford a boat?
I am a good dedicated fisherman in Louisiana but I can’t afford a boat. Is there any tips for me? I will take tips for where I can get a cheap bass boat or flat boat tht is in good condition. And If there is any way I can get a free one than that would be great. I will also take tips about great places to fish from the bank, or a way to make money fast to get a boat.

Boats are pretty expensive at times but you can normally find great used boats for a really decent price. Have you ever heard of Boat Trader? It’s the same thing as the Auto traders and what not, they have books and websites full of used and new boats and vehicles. I see a lot of good deals in those books. Actually now is one of the best times to be purchasing a boat, especially from a dealership. Sales are way down on boating right now which has caused prices to drastically drop in the last few years. A lot of dealerships are working with people more with things like payment plans and all of the rates at this time too. I’m not sure how old you are but it’d be worth a shot to either borrow money or get a loan from the bank if possible. Boat prices won’t be down like they are now for too much longer I wouldn’t think.
Surely you can afford $200-$300???? You can get a used canoe or Jon boat for that price. (Try looking in your local newspaper or on Craigs-list)
One of the best fishing boats I EVER had was a canoe. Canoes are easily transported, can get into bayous/lakes & rivers larger boats can’t, and you can slowly ADD things to them, (like swivel seats, Trolling motor, fish finders, Outriggers, Etc.), to make them more comfortable and “fishing/sea worthy”. (Check out this “dream” flat-back canoe called a Gheenoe- http://www.customgheenoe.com/gallery2/v/LoTide25/IMG_0307.jpg.html ) I had one of these, (Gheenoe) when I was in my 20′s.
To be honest, I caught BIGGER Bass out of my tricked-out canoe than either my Flats boat or my Bass boats.
Why?
Like I mentioned above, you can launch a canoe almost ANYWHERE. Imagine the implications to this…????
All those little ponds and small bayous you might have “eyed” on your way home from work/school immediately become accessible!!
Of all the Bass I’ve caught over 7-8LB’s, SIX were caught in small waters where larger Bass/Flats boats could not go.
Although you can use a Jon/canoe on bigger waters, it defeats the purpose of a smaller “launch anywhere” boat. And don’t think you can’t learn how to Tournament fish from a smaller boat- Mike Iconelli started his career fishing club tourneys out of a “slow”, “small”, 16FT Jon boat…….(as did many tourney pros)…..and WON consistently.
Think about it!!!
If you buy a canoe/jon at least your on the water and fishing! Holding out to get the “perfect” Tourney boat or Flats boat, (for FREE), is an absolute waste of your time! You can “learn the local water” just as easily in a smaller boat than a larger…..
SAVE your money!!!………You’d be surprised how cheap you may be able to find a used canoe or Jon boat….
Just remember- The fish don’t know or care what kind of boat you have…..!!!!! And when you start bringing stringers of fish back to the ramp, neither will anyone ELSE!
Bottom-line??? I guess you have to ask yourself- How “dedicated” are you?
Hope this helps ya??? Go check Craigslist! Good luck in your search!
PS- Thumbs up to Unmam- He is totally right about the current new boat buying scene…If you could save even more mullah who knows what you could purchase?!!!
go on craigslist.com or checkout ebay. look for a cheap boat with a trailer… john boats usually are pretty good. I always find really cheap ones that i can afford.. it is much more rewarding to fish from a boat
you can build your own canoe… that should be lot cheaper than buying one.
go to search engine and type in ‘canoe plans’
and you will find all those websites for it, but most of the plans are for sale (telling you to buy them)
but if you search for it, its not really difficult to find free ones.
