Trick to using lures?
I used to fish with my dad as a kid and I clearly remember using lures and cathing plenty of trout and bass with them. Then life got in the way and 10 years passed without any fishing.
Now I’m getting into it again and I realize I have forgotten most of the basic techniques for using lures so I resign to nightcrawlers.
How do I use lures? What is the proper techniques for reeling in a lure?
Best bass lures?
Can someone give me a crash course?

Depends on the lure!
Some are designed to sink if not reeled, so the behaviour of it rises and falls…like natural.
Some are meant to be trawled behind a slow boat.
Some are meant to be “Jigged” so it looks like a Frog.
My most successful lure ever, for Bass in the Canadian lakes, was a plastic mouse with a spoon under the chin. It floated. On a slow reel, its wobble was perfect and even fooled other people that could see the lure as I reeled it in. Got som BIG bass with that one.
If your talking about topwaters(poppers, floaters, stickbaits) then you aught to use a stop and go retrieve.Throw one of these out towards or around the bank or cover and just let it sit for a moment till the ripples are gone from it. Twitch your rod first once or twice short and sharply to get the bait working. Pausing between these twiches you should allow some time to pass so any alerted fish can have a great grab at it. Also real in your slack after you twich and not when you twich or else you may have spool trouble. Use a cadence when twiching and vary it. If your lure is anything other than a topwater then your best retrieve for your situation is going to be a constant slow or steady and stop retrieve. Either way you want to keep your lure in the strikezone for as long as possible and giving a slow retrieve or letting it fall after reeling in a little bit allows for that. Before you aim to fish with your lures you ought to try filling the bathtub and use your lures to find out how they move and which actions they give that attract fish. It took me 2 years to catch my first bass when i began using lures 5 years ago. Having tried almost anything available atleast once…I now always carry 3 willowleaf spinnersbaits of 3 colors,(white w/a spot of red, all black, and some type of white chartreuse pattern), Rebel’s Pop-r in a perch pattern, two rattle traps(rapala is very good), and two packs or 4 inch curltail grubs(chartreuse and white). These haved worked for me in all seasons and weather,…The biggest key is PATIENCE…good luck and dont catch them all!
