What are the best techniques for bass fishing?

I dont have a boat or anything along those lines. So i am stuck to fishing off the shore. From what ive read they like to stay down in the mossy areas of lakes. what lures/ bait should i use. what would be the easiest and the best bet? Also lately ive been getting caught on all the crap in the lake like sea weed and stuff and my line always breaks. How DO I AVOID THIS!!!!!! having to re make my line is very annoying. also i have not been fishing very long so any extra detail you would like to add in or any extra tips you would like to add in that dont really have to do with my question i will be completely okay with that. THANK YOU SO MUCH

first get a good test line around 15 lbs then get you a spinner bait and make sure you use a fisherman”s knot to tie it. I don’t know how to tie one so google it

  • reptbul:

First get a soft plastic worm or fluke. You can rig it weedless which is when you hide the lure in the plastic worm.this stops it from getting stuck in the plants.you can also use rattle traps but their is a small chance it will get stuck. sometimes they bite on live worms and minows/shinners.depends where your fishing

  • Adam S:

Ok, people will come on here and tell you all there favorite lures, tactics and presentations. DON’T LISTEN TO THEM. I am not saying they are wrong or that they are bad fisherman, but everywhere and every time something different may be the best thing to use or do. So if you want to be a better fisherman, follow these three tips.

RESEARCH-Search up your targeted species on the internet, buy a magazine or get a DVD. (preferably all 3) The more you know about the fish and where there are and what they are doing, the better chance of your success.

EQUIPMENT-If you buy a 5 dollar rod, you will get 5 dollar performance. I honestly believe that in fishing you get what you pay for. Don’t cut yourself short by being cheap. I am not saying you need a 200 dollar rod and 200 dollar reel, but just get the best you can within your budget.

EXPERIMENT-Don’t be afraid to mix up your presentations. I have had days where I tried every lure that seemed like it was perfect for the situation and not gotten a bite. Then I switched to some ridiculous crap as a last resort lure and to my surprise caught a bunch of fish. Don’t ride your favorite lures into the ground. Shake things up a little.

Just do these three things and I promise you that you will catch more fish.

P.S. About you getting caught up in weeds, use texas rigged plastics or other weedless lures. If you are breaking your line in weeds that means those weeds must be pretty thick, so change to braided line. It is much stronger and doesn’t stretch. You will want to tie a palomar know with braid because with some knots it can cut through itself.

here is how to texas rig. The vid shows with a worm but it works with all plastics-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h-GD2QP5hw

Here is how to tie the palomar I mentioned-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiDDdW22X9k

    Good luck on the water!

  • Dana:

All I can say is stop listening to the horseshit people have been feeding you.

If you’re a new fisherman. Try some live bait? Whoever told you how to “tie” hooks, forget it happened and let’s relearn.

    Tie Your Hook Right!
Put line through eye and pull 8 in. of line through
Twist hook so there are 8-9 twists in the line.
Run end of line through the line right near the eye and through the circle you’ve just made. Your knot now doesn’t suck ass.

    Lures?

Try using one of the these without a shit hook. Get a bait holder and texas rig it (google.com)

Also try investing in a few rapalas. They run about $4-8 each, but they’re worth your time. We all have our colors, it’s time for you to find yours.

Also, respool your reel and lower your fucking drag.

  • Backwater Charlie:

Part 1 ~ What lures are good for mossy areas ~ Texas rigged soft plastic baits & top-water frogs being the most common. Most other lure hang up way too easy for mossy areas. These kinds of baits are better with heavier line, heavier rod, and a casting reel.

Part 2 ~ What would be the easiest & what would be the best bet ~ I’m not for sure which would do better, a plastic worm or frog, but i do know that a plastic worm will be your best bet whether it be open water, or grassy areas. It is a very versatile, easy to use piece of plastic.

Part 3 ~ How do i avoid my line braking because of hang ups? ~ By using weed less lures (most jigs, Texas rigged plastic worms, and top-water frogs are not too bad for getting hung up) and use heavier line in case you still get hung up every now and then. I would use a braided line, around 50 lb. with a frog, and around 15 or 17 lb. mono for the plastics or jigs.

    ~ Extra tips ~

1.) Don’t be shy to cast where they are weeds, bass will stay around lots of cover.

2.) Always have more than one of the same lure on cue in case you do get one hung up or lost.

3.) Remember that anyone can be a successful fisherman. Whether that be you, or Kevin Van Dam, it doesn’t matter. You have to have confidence or you simply aren’t going to produce any amount of fish.

  • Fisher_King:

Well…….#1). Bass Techniques change with water condition, water temperature, water clarity, light condition, spawning, Etc.

There is no “perfect”, fool-proof, lure or presentation. (If there was, I’d be about $5000 richer! lol)

Your “best bet” is to purchase 4-6 pkgs of Soft Plastic’s & some Offset Wide Gap Hooks.

Soft Plastic’s can be fished “weedless”, have a high catch ratio, and they usually don’t need a ton of “manipulation”, (throw them out; reel a bit; stop; reel again).

More fish are caught on a Texas-rigged or Wacky-rigged Senko or Worm than any other lure.

    Here are some lure suggestions:

    1. Weedless Offset Hook- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_53661_100010002_100000000_100010000?cmCat=CROSSSELL_SEARCH

    2. Senko (type) “stick bait”- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_95621_100007000_100000000_100007000_100-7-0

    3. Ribbon-tailed Worm- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_38256____SearchResults

    4. 1/4 OZ Beetle-Spin Spinnerbait- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_15602____SearchResults

    5. Heddon 1/8 OZ Torpedo Topwater lure- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_2912____SearchResults

With only these 5 lures you can catch quite a few Bass.

Your line may be too light for fishing heavy weeds & woody structure. A good “middle of the road” line would be 10LB. (14-17LB would be better for SUPER weedy situations). Berkley Trilene XL makes a decent line.

Understand that tying (and RE-tying) lures and line is a basic part of fishing, (much like “catching” is a part of Baseball). If you intend to become a good fisher-person you need to easily and quickly know how to tie 2-3 knots. Here are a couple popular ones- Palomar Knot, Improved Clinch, Blood. When it comes to knots-Practice makes perfect.

Bass fishing is a multi-billion dollar industry. There is TONS of info on how to catch and stalk these fish. If you are really into Bass fishing you can easily find books, videos, video GAMES, magazines, Etc on the subject.

Hope this helps ya? Good luck.

Thumbs up to BC & Adam.

  • Rob:

If you are new, and you are in an area with structure (which should be good for fishing) I would go with a 10-15lb line.

The other guy is right, start with Texas rigged plastic worms (I like the twirly tail; dark color in dark water, light color in light water, nothing too fancy), they have caught more bass than any other lure on the market, also unlike lures, they are cheap and if you get good at fishing them you will catch consistently.

You can also try something like a spinner for topwater and you shouldn’t get snagged, but I would primarily do that when the fish are feeding, early am and before dark.

Get good at each type of bait before just trying everything, learn to fish the worm with and without weight. And use different weight setups. Sometimes I put a weight on 18′ up the line. Other times I put a slip bullet weight right against the worm and drag across the bottom and pop up every once in a while. I have caught tons of bass like that, it also helps you get to know the structure and depths of the water.

If you are throwing right into trees underwater, you can go with braided line, if you are getting snagged too much you are probably scaring the fish.

Finally, you can add other lures to your arsenal once you have a comfort level, and more importantly, casting skills that land your bait where you want it, and not breaking off lures in trees and bushes and such. They add up quick.

    Good luck!

  • David:

if you are strictly bass fishing use 12lb and up line. You can use weedless hooks since you keep geting tangled with weeds. I would use plastic worms with a weed less hook and jig it off the bottom.

  • The Wormist:

charlie and fisher king offer you excellent information.
a texas rigged plastic worm is one of the most weedless and effective lures ever made for bass.
also the weedy and mossy areas are one of their preferred hangouts. a topwater weedless rigged frog is a premier bait for weedy situations. you will probably want 12 or 15lb line to pull fish from this stuff.
and as Dana mentioned, a good knot is an absolute necessity. that may be why your line constantly breaks. this site l will point you to is the best one l have found for easy to understand instructions.

plastic worms will work all year round. check all the different ways of fishing and rigging them.
fishing from the bank the following methods will work best. all of my own fishing is from the shoreline.
    texas rig
    dropshot rig
    wacky rig
    shakey head rig
a carolina rig can be used bank fishing but is most effectively used from a boat.
