What baits to use for Bass in Heavy Cover?
Situation: I am helping a beginner bass fisherman try to catch fish from heavy milfoil (grows all the way to the surface.) What is the best and easiest snagless presentation? I was thinking about spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, weedless spoons, jitterbugs etc. Please give me your top 3 techniques. I am going to hold off on suggesting flipping or pitching jigs or lizards as my freind does not have the setup or experience to fish plastics this way.

In the thickest grass situation, I use the senko type worms rigged Texas style weedless and fished weightless- these lures cast easy – I cast into the weeds and pull it to the openings in the grass cover and fish it slowly to the other side of the opening and repeat. I also cast to the weed lines and fish it slowly with twitches of the rod tip. The next lure is great on getting strikes, but hard to hook a high percentage of the fish on it- It’s the Ribbet frog- cast easily and gets a lot of strikes, about one in three is the average for catching a bass for me- some people may do better. It’s a fun lure to fish .When I fish weeds , these two baits are the ones I have the most success on .Try them-you’ll enjoy fishing them.
I would suggest a Scum frog or A Dean Rojas model frog. Jerk them along pretty quick with a pause now and then. Be sure to tell him to wait until he feels the fish on the bait before setting the hook. The fish will explode on the bait and yet still not have it in its mouth. The explosion will cause the fisherman to jerk without the fish having the bait. Check and make sure your pal does not have heart trouble as this method can cause Heart attacks.
Have fun. (A Zoom Fluke will work also.)
