When fishing for bluefish and striped bass?
What is a preffered LURE. Not bait.
However, are clams a good bait for either of these fish? If so, do you rest it on the bottom or float it somewhere in the middle?
And throw in any other tips you have

l don’t think clams are a preferred bait or food for bluefish. not too sure about stripers either. but stripers do pick up nightcrawlers off the bottom in fresh water, so who knows?
l really believe you would have much better luck casting lures such as bucktails and diamond jigs or large kastmasters.

Wormist has good suggestions. I would also pick up some broken-back rebels. Clams will catch you catfish, that is the only fish I know of in my area that will go for clams.
Bluefish LOVE live bait and lures that are “shiny” and moving quick.
The perfect combination between the two is a Spoon with a Bait-Strip.
4 1/4″ Drone Spoon- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_8349____SearchResults
Use a 4-6″ strip of Mullet (or any saltwater bait fish) as a trailer for the Drone spoon. The Bait-strip acts as an “attractant” and gives the Blues something to “taste”. This rig is DEADLY on Bluefish.
Purchase various colors of Spoons, (Silver, Gold, Chartreuse).
Treble-hooked spoons work well too, but lack the bait-strip “edge”.
Another fantastic lure for Blues?- Gotcha lures- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_8349____SearchResults
Stripers & Blues LOVE Large Jigs.
Start with a 3/4 OZ Hair Jig & add a Curly-Tailed Grub or Berkley Gulp Trailer if need be.
Here are some good Hair Jigs- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_72167____SearchResults

I’m confident that if you use any of the rigs & lures I’ve suggested you will catch fish.
Good luck!
