Baitcaster Reel questions?
Hello everyone, Ive asked this before but its was before summer and nows the time when i need the information. Im on the market for a new Baitcaster Fishing Reel. Im looking to spend $125 to $175 tops. Im new to these and ive heard they can be really tricky. So my question what are the best models for my price range and whats best for a beginner. Ive been fishing for 20 years im not new to fishing just bait casters. So something maybe in the intermediate stage because i dont want to buy then have to upgrade next year. Also i will be purchasing this from Bass pro shop or Cabelas. So thanks for the help in advance. And if you could explain some of the differences between reels i would appreciate that too like say, why go with this one and not this one.

Ive been fishing for years and have bought my fair share of baitcasting reels and never spent over 80 bucks on them. Abu Garcia is top of the line as far as reels and rods go. I have 2 of the black max series reels (Abu Garcia) and love them. I bought them both from bass pro for right at 80 bucks for the reel and rod combo. One ive had for a couple years now and its still just as smooth as it was brand new. I believe its a 6:2:1 gear ratio which is great for everything from cranking to slow rolling a spinnerbait. These reels really arnt all that hard to get used to and master. When you get it mess around with the tension and the brake until whatever bait you have on falls slowly, not to where it drops like a rock or doesnt move at all. When using heavier baits i like to get it set to where when the bait hits the ground the spool stops without backlashing itself.
It’s a large price range but i can get a reel as good as any of the reels in your price, and is $5 cheaper, it’s the Shimano Citica E Low-Bait Cast reel. I am telling you this is one of the best buys you will make in your life. The reel is indestructible. Plus the Shimano name helps out a lot (wink).
Here’s what it features – Features an aluminum frame with A6063 aluminum Lo Mass® spool; Super Free™ pinion gear support system; Variable Brake System (VBS®); Super Stopper II with Assist Stopper™; Dartainium® drag. 3 ball bearings, plus 1 roller bearing.
I don’t know what half of that crap is but it’s sure worth that $120. Plus, if you’re shopping online, a $175 will max out at around $195 on occasion. So stick with the Citica.
Spool it with 12 lb. Stren Monofilament line – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_21616____SearchResults
Happy fishing.
in fishing as in most anything else, “you get what you pay for”.
EITHER (you get TWO choices here):
increase your budget to 200 bucks and purchase a shimano curado which is as much reel as you can find from a regular manufacturer in that price range – it’s really a sweet reel.
OR:
purchase from either bass pro shop or cabela’s their own brand in the best your budget can stand. they offer some high quality rods and reels in their higher lines of tackle. better by far than anything you will pull off the shelf at one of the discount marts. the rod/reel combos offer even better deals with usually an extra 50 bucks off the price.
l have several rods and reels from both. l’m quite happy with them.
check the johnny morris series at BPS and the prodigy line-up at cabela’s.
good luck.
most people that become unhappy with BC tackle is because they bought crappy stuff with inferior bearings and materials. the weight of the spool also needs to be taken into consideration. lighter will cast better. a large capacity spool full of line will weigh much more than a large arbor spool with sufficient line to fish. plus you don’t have 250 more yards of line on the reel than you will ever use.
and if you start off with better gear, you won’t be replacing it after the first year.
Sounds like you need to find a fishing friend who can teach you how ,what and when to fish . If you don’t know anyone find a good tackle shop and talk to them . There is always help out there for a learner .
