Fishing reel for Christmas?

I’m trying to find a fishing reel to purchase for my husband for Christmas! He’s kind of picky and is a SERIOUS big time fishing-fanatic. We’re in Minnesota, so fresh water, bass fishing. I’d like to keep the price between $100 – $175. I went to bass pro shops online, but I don’t get this “line capacity” thing. I know he likes the “spinning reels.” There’s too many choices, and I’ll probably pick the wrong one. We don’t do gift certificates, because we like to torture each other with trying to buy “just the right thing” (it’s more fun that way)! Any help would be great!

Shimano, Quantum, Abu Garcia are all good. Don’t worry about line capacity it’s not a big deal.

  • Chem Balla Gino Hyke:

Shimano Stradic, line capacity 8-10-12 or 10-12-14

  • Eric:

look at the tacklewarehouse.com they have a bunch of last year models on sale, a few good shimanos too

The line capacity isn’t a big deal, but the strength of line it’s made for does matter, otherwise the reel will be too big or too small. If you’re getting a reel for 12 pound line (for example), it’ll be the right size for 12 pound line, and hold enough line for fishing with it.

Most reels are made for a range of line strengths (like 8 to 15 pound) so pick one which is more or less centered on the strength you think he’ll use.

Of all my reels, my Pflueger President is by far my favorite spinning reel. At around 60 bucks the smoothness and overall quality of the reel, as compared to other top brands, really surprised me. After hearing so many of my tournament fishing friends rave about this reel, I went out and got my own and rarely use my others. I use the 40 size reel matched with a 6’6″ medium heavy BPS Bionic Blade rod. For anyone who is serious about fishing, and loves quality gear, this is the spinning reel to get.

There is only one reel i would recommend to you and that is the Abu Garcia Revo. It is one of the most popular among pro fisherman. you can find them all over but what i would do is find out a little more about what type of fish you husband is after (small mouth bass or large) then call bass Pro shops or Cabala’s and ask the experienced people what they think is good for him. They will Point you in the right direction. Good luck and please call my wife and tell her that this is what i want to. LOL

teh most important things would be full time anti reverse and the number of ball bearings the more the better if you know what he fishes for mainly tell the salesman and he will help you with the line capacity issue but less than six bearings is no good i would recomend 8 or 9 and absolutly no trigger cast models full time anti reverse is the only way to go plan on spending around $130

a good bass spinning reel is a PennĀ® Slammer 360
it is a saltater reel but it works very well on freshwater

Take a look at his gear first.

I bet he got a few spinning reels in a few sizes. note them down and narrow down to the 2-3 reels you remember often see him using.
Now, you have to decide to either get him the same size reel that he always uses or something smaller or bigger.

Once you have decided on the size, get down to the tackle shops.
For spinning reels, i recommend either a diawa or shimano. (Japanese brands)

For the brands i recommended, the reel sizes are usually size 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000…etc. The sizes of the both brands differ slightly. shimano size 2000 is smaller than diawa size 2000.

Now, based on your budget, get the most expensive model you can afford. Have fun shopping! remember to look around compare prices.

BTW, he might have reels of the 2 brands i mentioned, note down the name and size of the model. Make sure the reel you buy is a higher end model than the one he is already using first before you commit.
