I just started fly fishing and i know what you are thinking, it just never goes far enough and has to be the hard ware. Actually that is usually wrong (usually). Of course it will make a huge difference in a experienced fly fishermans hands but in somones like yours or mine its all in the form. Make sure you practice a proper back and forward cast. A good way my Uncle tought me is that when you pull back or forward you can actually feel the weight increase when the line begins to roll out and thats when you change direction. If the line is not taught and you pull too soon it will not go as far.
An 8′ rod is probably enough. I know it sounds corny, but get the book “A River Runs Through It” and read the description of the “presbyterian” casting technique. It actually describes very well the proper method of casting a fly. Honestly, I’ve been fly fishing since I was about eight years old and 55-60 feet is as far as I can go with any accuracy. Of course, for all but a few of the places I fish that is more than enough. I have fly fished for bass from a canoe, and it was huge fun. My son and I probably caught 25-30 bass over six hours in the canoe. BTW, I cant cast as far sitting down! Our most sucessful spot was along the edge of a dock with #10 woolies just dragging them about 18″ under the water right up the edge of the dock. Some pretty good sized bass would come out from under to grab them. Happy fishing.
Yes to a certain point they will but an 8 foot rod is plenty once you get the hang of using a fly rod. Pflueger is a great great brand by the way. If you’re having trouble casting this thing mak sure you’re bringing your rod from about a 9 o clock position to a 12 o clock position, then throwing your bait out. Everybody that I’ve seen first throwing a fly rod, including myself has took the rod way back behind their head and casting like they would a regular bass setup. This does nothing but kill your distance when casting these rods whereas when you stop it at a 12 o clock position your fly will go straight back rather than arching towards the ground then shooting striaght up in the air.
here is a link and you will see that some of the rods just for bass fly fishing are lengths from 7 foot 11inch to the standard 9 foot rods but some have 8 foot 3inch rods just click on the fly rods and you will get an idea to what most fly rods are these days for bass fishing it used to be just a regular old 9 foot rod but they are making new ones that are made just for that purpose of fly fishing for bass.
And the extra length well that is mainly for if you have brush e.t.c. behind you not to really make you cast father than a 8 foot rod.
I hope it helps you get an idea.
