Too hard to say exactly why you didn’t catch fish. Probably some combination of your chosen lure, the presentation, and time of day. We don’t know where you are, what gear you’re using, your skill level, or when you’re fishing, so, no one’s gonna be able to say, “Throw a Rapala Countdown Perch into the lilly pads just to the right of the old tree stump at 3 p.m. on cloudy days in March and you’ll catch a nice big bass.” (Although you can go ahead and try that advice and if it catches fish be sure to give me credit.)

What you should really do is ask some of those “pros” how they catch fish. From your post I’m inferring that you’re a younger guy. If you see someone catching fish in this area, politely approach them and ask them what they’re fishing for. Every now and then you’ll come upon a guy who is secretive and rude, but most anglers (especially old duffers) are more than happy to tell you how they unlocked the secrets of a particular place, and older anglers like to help younger ones — it’s part of the code. Also, if there are any bait and tackle shops around, or even sporting goods shops, ask the sales people there if they know how to fish your dock. Bait shop sales people depend on your fishing success for their livelihood, so they’re usually pretty good about giving advice.

Ask about time of day, time of year, specific lures, tackle (line, swivels, etc), presentation, and retrieval. There are some universal rules of fishing –

    1. Where one fish is caught, others can be caught.
    2. Where one person is catching fish, others can catch fish.

These two rules are in your favor, you just have to find someone to help you along a bit.

for bass fishing use a 3-7 inch shiner minnow, a bluegill, or a live shad. if u want to use artificial lures use a spinnerbait during sunny times and plastic worms for cloudy or dark times.

If you have the oppurtunity to see the pros fish your dock, then you have the oppurtunity to watch how they are casting, location of the cast, the speed of the retrieve, are they counting down the lure before they start their retreive, are they cranking it as soon as the lure hits the water, and possibly they are varying the speed of the retrieve on each cast, pay special attention to all these factors. Also, look to see what color lure is working for them, you can learn alot just by watching.
I’m sure they wouldn’t mind answering a few questions, but remember to respect their fishing time, they just might be practicing for a tournament, in which case, they are doing exactly what you will be doing, working on presentation, and the best technique possible for putting fish in the livewell, experiment, you’ll figure out what works best, and maybe someday you will be able to help answer somebodys questions to help them improve their skills. Most of all, just have fun with it, that’s what it’s all about !!!
