Most of you that are familiar with me and my answers……?

…probably know how I feel about cheap infomercial tackle, and crap like that.

But I think I may have to change my mind and feelings about one in particular. You guessed it, the Banjo Minnow.

A week ago, my dad and I went up to Casitas for night fishing and I happened to catch a bass under some guy’s nose on a drop shot. It was small, about a pound and a half, but he still got a kick out of it. Especially since he was fishing a drop shot rig also. We got to talking after I showed him my way of rigging up the drop shot rig and he mentioned the Banjo Minnow and how well it works and how often he likes fishing it. I rolled my eyes and just thought, “Blah, blah, blah” to myself in my head. I jokingly said I’d like to try one on drop shot rig just to see how it works. I walked off to retie.

Later on in the evening, I ran into him again where my dad I decided to fish for the night. As we were leaving, he called me over to his truck and lo-and-behold, there sitting on the tailgate of his pickup, is a Banjo Minnow Kit. He shows it off and again blabs about how good it works. Then he brought up how I said I’d like to try one on drop shot and he gave me two of ‘em. A small chartreuse one and a bigger one in a cinnamon/flake color. Holy sh*t.

So I tried the smaller chartreuse one on a drop shot rig yesterday using a size-four octopus/drop shot hook and guess what? I got f*ckin’ bit! It wasn’t a good hit, I totally missed it, but I still got a bite on a damn Banjo Minnow. It really surprised the hell out of me because it was my first cast of the day. It kinda bothered me that about an hour or so later I lost it and my sinker in some rocks at another spot. But I got the hook back.

I may have to ask my girlfriend to buy me Banjo Minnow Kit next times she treats me to a visit to Bass Pro Shops…
I didn’t mean for it to be so long, nor did I mean to ramble. It was just an “experience” that I felt like sharing with the YA! Answers’ Fishing Questions community. I think as some of you as “friends” in a way and I like to share my experiences with my friends. Anyway, continue. As you were.
I know it, F_K. Thanks anyway. Evidently, he liked your answer better. And where I’m catchin’ these big smallies is a secret! *evil laugh*
Thanks Pete, that makes me feel better. Compare me to a damn blind squirrel…
James, trust me, keeping the girlfriend and her money away from those damn things. I figure the strike I got was a fluke.
Wormist, nope, didn’t get any weird “deliverance” type ideas in my head while using it. I didn’t start chewing tobacco or wearing funny looking broke down hats, either. I was smoking a cigarette at the time though. What are bib overalls?

And yeah, anything that’s free I’ll try.
dumdum, I get out waaay too much, thank you. Haha.
Big Bass, I don’t use garbage like this either, but since it was free and the dude was nice enough to give me TWO of them, I figured what the hell.
I’ve got nineteen hours to choose a Best Answer. If I can’t choose one, then I’ll just have to let it go into voting and let you guys battle it out…

  • Backwater Charlie:

Same thing happened to me. I hooked a 12″, 20lb bass on a Banjo once. It was a little bit skinny, if it would have eaten anything lately it may have pushed 25lb.

Jokes aside, glad you got a hit on it! Keep fishing it and report back to us if you get anything.

  • The Wormist:

you didn’t get any weird “deliverance” type ideas in your head while using it, didja??
didn’t start chewing tobacco or wearing funny looking broke down hats? bib overalls?
    nuthin’ else?
okay, l guess l could see myself trying a free one.

James… but will it be okay to use it at night? at least it can’t be seen…

  • Peter_AZ:

One bite doesn’t prove much. As they say, “Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.”

ADD: I’m not comparing you to a blind squirrel, I’m comparing the lure to one.

  • Pudge:

your very smart with this fishing stuff. you think you could help me with my question on crappie?

  • James W:

Yes, they do work. But, they are also very over priced. They are not worth your or your GF’s money. Please please stay away from the light! :D

    Addition:
There is no need to spend that much for that kind of performance.

Here’s something that cost around $5.00 per pack:

This guy is better suited for drop-shotting:

    LOL Wormist!

Ah smallies. Have you tried roboworms and finesse worms on them? Drop shotting seemed to be the norm but putting them directly on a small jig head would produce great results. There are also 2″ and 3″ senkos out there and they were deadly on smallies. Since I’m at it already, I will reveal a couple of my smallie secrets. Tubes designed for salmons/steelheads are deadly. The body of a beetle spin could be a real killer if used properly. You could drop shot them. You could put them behind a small jig head. You could even fly line them. This lure took me a little longer to learn but it really is worth the effort.

  • Fisher_King:

GMB, you KNEW you were gonna catch hell over this story! (lol) Ya got guts!

Should I send ya my Helicopter lures and a Pen rod? (teasin ya!)

Teasin’ aside, Banjo ain’t necessarily “bad”.

My motto?- If it works for YOU, use it!

By the way- You got ROBBED for BA on the Smallmouth/Largemouth debate. You really did have BA…I don’t know why they gave me BA on that- you were the obvious winner….idiots on YAnswer’s are dumber than a bag of hammers……

James- LMAO @ “Stay away from the light” comment!

  • Green!!:

    Wow, so it works eh?

  • One_Big_Bass12:

  • dumdum:

I’m going to have to tell you as my friends tell me, as they look at me a little odd and just say
” you don’t get out very much, do you”
