On a scale of 1-10 how “hardcore” of a Bass fisherman are you?
I consider myself hardcore and yet I know guys who are even more hardcore than me. (My Clubs T director’s would scale in at a 8 or 9.)
I scale myself at a solid 7.
Remember, how much you SPEND annually, how much time away from family, how many T you fish in a year, how successful you are in catching ‘ole bucket-mouth, how many hours on the water, how much “data” you’ve collected (through magazines, books, literature), Etc should sway your decision.
And be honest!
Unless your a “Pro”, fishing a circuit as your only income, scaling yourself a 10 would be silly.
Just a fun Q.
In the past I would have considered myself a 9. I was raised in Florida and fished HEAVILY for Bass and Inshore Saltwater fish. I worked for 3 years managing a Sports AU fishing dept, (the top selling Sporst AU in Florida!). I fished Trails and had at least 3 T a month from the age of 20-25- thats a LOT of fishing Gentlemen/Ladys!. Unfortunantley, when you get married……and have children…….things kinda slow down….(wink) (lol).
My fav T every year, (in Fla) was the Wolfson- check it out- http://www.ultimatebass.com/bass-fishing-forum/index.php?topic=13241.0 Imagine 350-400 Bass boats ready to take off in “flights” of 50! It’s a site to see! And a BUMPY ride….whew! (lol)
I still get on the water twice a week and have 1-2 T per month. My average bag on most ANY MN lake is approx 9-10 LB’s per 5 hours. Not bad for a “weekend warrior”…(lol).
All you young “whipper snappers” a word of warning- Once you get married, (and have a couple children), your fishing time will be cut
…….in half! So, fish it hard NOW and enjoy each day you have casting for ‘ole Bucket-mouth.
Why?
‘Cause the house needs painting, the yard needs mowing, the kids are sick, the wife needs “attention”…….(LOL).
Thanks for all the good answer’s! I’m not gonna choose a BA- everyone here deserves the BA.
See ya on the water!

Maybe a 1 or 2, I was gonna say -3, but I like catching an occasional bass or two, and there is something to be said about one of those big bucketmouthed things hitting a lure…
But you know me well enough by now to know that I like catching stuff for the table, and well, bass just don’t hit the spot… if that’s the fishing to be had, though, I’ll gladly go, but give me a day out on a seagrass flat chasing reds and trout with a little break under a bridge for some mangroves and sheepies, I’ll take that over bass any day.
1,000,000…well ok I’m not a Pro…so 9 1/2…
I eat, sleep, and live Bass Fishing…I have ADHD so I think or talk about fishing at least 100 or more times a day…most of the Websites I read are about fishing…I spend well over a couple a K a year on just on soft plastics…I try to fish at least every weekend…but would go everyday if the wife would let me…I have several notebooks full of “Fishing Journals”…if I could fish as much as KVD and the rest…you would see my face on TV as much as them…I like the Largemouth, but I’ve come to love the Spot…=)
EDIT: Got to remember down here it is a year around “sport”
im only 15 so i dont have a whole lot of time with school and all
but durring the summer when i do get the chance to fish im all about BASS!
i usually go out with mu cousin and he has a 18ft bass boat
i always am controlling the boat and i love fishing docks and boat houses
i zigzag in out and around docks and boathouses flipin and pitchen and crankin like crazy
i probably spend about 200$ over the summer on soft plastics and another 100 on crank baits and spinners
so when i really get into it from 1-10 i woulds say im a 9 for sure
I would say a strong 7 as well. If I owned my own boat I would go higher because I would fish more and enter tournaments. I have stacks of magazines (Bassmaster, Bassin, Basswest, Bass Anglers Guide and some In Fisherman) as well as bookmarked many websites like Wired 2 Fish, Bassfan, Basszone, Bassmaster, Basseast, Basspro, and Tacklewarehouse.com which I check on a daily basis. I am such a geek I even keep my tackle inventory on my laptop so I don’t handle my lures until it’s time to fish. I play fantasy fishing and video games. I’m a junkie I tell ya, a junkie. I have enough tackle and put the brakes on buying more but after a few weeks I buy more.
I’d say a 6.5, I love when a bass slams my lure but if something else is willing to bite more often I tend to go with that, like right now I’m taking advantage of the crappie feeding frenzy, but I still get the occasional bass, which is always a bonus.
lol.. love the question… probably 10 because im Kevin Van Dam’s son Alton.. i go every day of my life… i love it unconditionally
ummmmm .05lol
the only time i go bass fishing is when i visit family and at that all we catch is small smallies
I’d say about .01. I just don’t get the enthusiasm some do catching “ditch pickles”.
probably at a 4, just cuz i don’t spend that much money on equipment for bass i can catch with my trusty ol’ baitcaster i’ve used since i was little and i can fish just as good from the shore as i can from a boat
plus, i only get to go fishing about once a month and not in the winter when it freezes over, otherwise i would love to go more often
4. Ever time I go fishing, i will intentionally go after bass. However being a lazy unemployed 15 year old, I can’t afford a boat or even that many lures. So, yeah. if the bass aren’t biting my 4 rapalas, 7 rebels, 2 spinnerbaits, 2 worm colors or my berkeley gulp, then i resort to catfishing.
if i had a boat already and could be on a lake 24-7, i would. If i didnt have school or have to work or anything i would be a 9
A full solid 10. I’m hard to the core. Oinkin’ from the boinkin’. Squeakin’ from the freakin’. Y’know. Blah. Blah.
Unlike you, I don’t fish tournaments though. I don’t have a boat either, and fish from the shoreline. But when I am fishing, I think in my head (don’t worry, they know me here) that I am. And feel like I am. So every little move and presentation I make is either going to “put me in the money” (catch me a bass) or not.
Annuallyy? Well, I haven’t gone up to the lake in about six weeks due to another dislocated shoulder, but I am going in a little less than 3 1/2 hours. Plus the fact that the fuel pump on my car went out two weeks ago is really going cut waaaaaaay the hell into my fishing time. I would say before that crap, on average, 3 or 4 times a week, every week, each month. I’d leave my house between 4:30 and 5:00 am. Get to the lake a half hour later, depending on what time the Casitas gate-keeper decides to open up on any particular day, usually start fishing at 5:45 and go until sundown or when the ranger decides to kick me out.
Family? My dad is the only family member that I ever go with.
How successful? Pfft! You try fishing Lake Casitas a.k.a “Lake No Fish”! I think I’m fairly successful. I mean, I’m fishing from the shoreline, c’mon, I can’t hit all the spots that I could with a boat. But on average, I get a limit of (not huge) fish every trip.
Haha I like how you put it as “data”. Or did you you mean DAY-ta? Whatever. Most of the stuff that I’ve learned about bass and bass fishing has been from my dad. Since I was two years old, that man has been preaching it to me. And I’ve listened and I’ve paid attention (and my dues). Of course, I’ve read damn near every piece of bass fishing literature, book and magazine and gotten just a little more info from it.
Most of the tackle I use is older stuff, but when it was brand spankin’ new, it was top of the line sh*t. Tell me catching an 8 pounder on a thirty year old Fenwick Fenglass Lunker Stick and an Ambassadeur 2500C of the same age isn’t nice…
Scaling (no pun intended, right?) myself as a 10 is silly? Pfft, not the way I see it. And I AM being honest.
not at all anymore but three years ago i would say about a 9. i would go at least 5 days a week. fish 8 hours, go to work for 8hr, sleep for at the most 5hr. then do it all again. usually after the third time in a row. take a sleeping day. there would be night i couldn’t sleep at all because i couldn’t wait to get on the lake. with my 2 day’s off fish all day from sun up, to at least 3pm. didn’t fish much when it was raining, sometimes. i got a big bag box with 6 clear Boxes in it. all i can fit in it, is my bass lures, i would think at least $600- $700 worth. about $400 in rods and reels. been a subscriber to in-fisherman for 5 years, and bassmaster for 2. recorded (on my dvr) and watched every bassmaster for 4years, and still to till this day watch it. Biggest large 21in, biggest smallie 22in (my girl friend smoked me with a 23 1/2in smallie this year while muskie fishing, her first year fishing, hurt my feelings alittle bit, but really happy for her) lots of 20in fish, could never seem to land the monster myself, had some pigs on. HARDCORE basser from 18yrs old to 23yrs old, started felling old and needed my sleep. now all my stuff is getting dusting in my basement. moved on to muskie and pike, down to 2 days a week of fishing, sometimes 3. i really love bass fishing, I’LL BE BACK,nothing like watching that swirl while your setting the hook, or a bass jumping 3ft in the air going after a topwater. CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! i’ve seen people keep 5 bass 3 days in a row, that $hit really grinds my gears.
Sorry to disagree with you but bass is the only fish i target and why do you have to enter a tournament to be a ten, so with that said i will not even rate myself!
1- or 2- at the most. I don’t do a lot of Bass fishing but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it sometimes.
Maybe a one or 2 I have my own boat. I love to catch smallmouth I don’t mind catching them at all, But I’m more after table fair. But they are fun to catch.
7
I would have to say I am about an 8. I am disabled so I don’t work but I try to fish at least once a day. Which isn’t hard since I ride my handicapped scooter .1 miles down the road to the fishing hole.
I rate myself a 3 because I usually dont fish for them. I fish in a river that has panfish, catfish, carp, and bass. I usually catch some bass while using crappie jigs. I’m an unemployed 17 year old kid so i don’t have much money for lures… have to rely on my dad to buy tackle. If I had the money,I would buy some bass lures and fish for them.
