Delaware River Flyfishing Catch and Release!
Getting some “fall-fish” on the fly in the mighty Delaware River on the Flyrod.
choker campbell and his 16-piece band play that motown sound! that’s the name of the album of recorded by band leader choker campbell for motown. it’s quite unusual for the fact that it consists of big band arrangements of some of the then-current motown hits. the track listing: “baby love,” “come see about me,” “where did our love go,” “dancing in the street,” “baby, i need your loving,” “that’s what love is made of,” “wild one,” “mickey’s monkey,” “heat wave,” “pride and joy,” “hitch hike,” “fingertips.” this is choker campbell’s treatment of the supremes’ hit, “come see about me.” it captures all the essential rockin’ vibe of “the motown sound” and amps it up quite a bit with plenty of brass. whether or not the rhythm section includes the funk brothers on drums, bass and guitar i can’t say, but the bedrock groove is there! not much informations seems to be available about choker campbell and his 16-piece band- in many photos of the early motown revues, you’ll catch a glimpse of choker and those fantastic horns, but it’s not known how long choker’s stint with motown lasted. so if anyone has anything to contribute, bring it on!

@canonet17 thanks for that information. yes, i’m afraid a lot of groups received less-than-deserved promotion as the years went on. thankfully, it seems more and more people have become fans of motown over the recent years and now a lot of those artists are getting at least some recognition.
@tomovox
He was at Motown from 1960 to 1969 as the big band director of the Motortown revue and went to do his own projects when done.
.There’s much with Motown that;s lost to history , in my opinion, due to Gordy wanting to focus more on Ross in later years than the other groups who I feel had more talent.
@canonet17 Yes, I believe that’s basically the situation with Choker Campbell. I don’t recall how long he stayed at Motown. The LP is very interesting- imagine a Big Band version of Martha and the Vandellas’ “Wild One!” If you like big brass arrangements (which I do) then I think you’ll like this album, if only because it’s a unique chapter in Motown’s history.
I am looking for the LP after hearing this as it seems to have some more interesting tracks from Choker Campbell. Apparently, he was the band leader ( most likely his guys played the horns in many motown recordings) for the Motortown revues.
@canonet17 Actually, I hadn’t heard of Choker either until I saw an old ad for Motown albums and saw the LP he did for the label. I found a cd that combined his album with one by the Funk Brothers and it’s very interesting hearing Motown hits played Big Band style! This was one of the funkiest cuts on the LP. You’re right though, that it seems not a lot of people know of him and his work.
This is pretty cool! I have never heard of Choker Campbell but seems he had a bad at least back to the early 50s and was active into the 90s. Seems he’s lost in history.
I actually did it about 3 different times, but it’s such a great big band arrangement of a fun song, it deserved a bit of “fire power” visuals to go along with it!
Great work, it must have taken you ages to do this.
