I am about to enter my first fishing tournament. It’s at a local lake for bass and can use live or art. bait.

Any tips on lure selection or anything that will help me since I am new on the scene. Thanks.

well my dear if its course fishing (freshwater) we down here are not allowed to use livebait to catch pike but i suggest you talk it off with ur fisher chairman he/she will advize you by there rules and regulations

  • Lee M:

Bass tournaments do not allow live bait. They do not allow trolling either. They will have a long list of rules and waivers for you to sign. Most tournaments will also have polygraph testing for the most prize winners. Good luck!

For a beginner you can not go wrong with live bait if allowed. For artificial lures would need more info. such as location, water temp, water color/clarity, does it have weeds, wood etc.
I would suggest you buying a Zebco 33 reel with a rod between 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 feet, easy to use for a novice, later buy a good level wind rod and reel and practice casting to use with artificial lures. If you want to learn and be serious about bass fishing subscribe to B.A.S.S. magazine or check books out at local library. Also ask experienced fisherman or lady to help. Normally bass tournaments are help using artificial lures only. Hope some of this helps

if its not a club like flw, BASS,or etc then i’m sure you can use live bait.

very good question! Live bait is better for sure but a lot of anglers are against it. I used to fish with water dogs many years ago and would catch some real lunkers. Live shad works well to. As far as artificial I would say a worm this time of year. try posting at http://www.fishntell.com/ and see what they say.

If its legal to use two poles, use both. Suspend a minnow with a bobber under some brush and work a spinner along a bank or dock. Also, try using a fluke or crank bait.
