Can I use bass lures on catfish?

I’VE NEVER BEEN CATFISH FISHING, I HAVE NOTHING BUT BASS LURES AND TACKLE. BESIDES THE LEADERS IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN USE? DO SPINNERS OR BUZZ BAITS OR ANYTHING WORK ON CATFISH?

Yes catfish eat almost anything. They are scavengers by nature. I recommend H&H double spinners, squrit some crawfish oil on em and fish with them slowly. Better yet get a corke and walk through the woods for a sec and grab some bugs into a can. Also the color of the bugs will tell you what color to use. A pice of lunchmeat on a hook is killer on em also. Good Luck

  • rugrat 1:

treble hook and a gob of nightys

I have cought three cats on various lures ine on a original rapala one on a spinnerbait and another on fly fishing gear all legally cought through the lips they hit the lures but this is very rare I would say stick to baits like chicken livers you will likley never catch a cat on bass lures

  • William C:

That is a waste of time. Best bait is a piece of fresh chicken liver, about the size of your thumb nail, on a small hook, fished on the bottom.

  • Tom:

Channel cats will take lures with no problem. Crawfish imitators seem most popular.

For any other kind, you will need information from someone living south of me.

  • stop_makin_cents:

The occasionally Cat WILL hit lures but it is rare.

If you really want to target Cats you should use cut-bait or a live shiner fished on the bottom.

    Good luck!

I have caught a few on crank baits, but it is very rare. You need to get chicken liver, or some kind of blood bait designed for catfish. I have caught them on minnows as well. But lure fishing for catfish is not something you should do if you are targeting catfish.

  • YT:

Use live bait, cut bait, livers, etc. I have caught catfish on jigs or small spinners while fishing for crappie but it is very rare. The one that amazed me was a nice cat I caught on a large rattle trap while bass fishing.

  • M G:

i have never caught a cat on lures. use the packaged stink bait.

  • William B:

ya but they wont bit on it, buy a box of worms,

  • AIRFLOW:

All i used to fish for was catfish when i was kid, the best thing you could use is a piece of raw chicken liver, only once had a catfish on a lure.

  • Lt:

just go get some treble hooks and a big cork. Bait depends on where you are. Here in Louisiana, I find that crawfish tails work great. It helps to leave the exoskeleton on, though, as it keeps smaller fish from eating the crawfish meat.

I was trolling for walleye last year using a dixie spinner and caught a huge cat. These spinners are also great for bass…overall great lure, check them out.

    Why not? catfish eat anything.

  • florasbaddog:

use your plastic worms around the dam and rocks during spawning season about may / june time frame in tx. Several of the Bass anglers catch them. Or try your jigs with a pigtail or worm on the end of it.

  • C L:

I have only caught 1 cat on a bass lure. it was a rappala. I found that nightcrawlers work best or chicken/turkey livers. I caught my 68lb Flathead on nightcrawlers.

  • rapture:

Id just use a slip sinker rig with a hook and a night crawler or a hunk of chicken liver. you dont need to go out and buy new gear or anything. im sure you probably have everything you need already
