How do I catch fish? (bluegill, crappie, and bass preferably)?

How can i catch a fish? I’ve gone fishing four times, 3-4 hours each, and haven’t caught a single fish (not even a nibble!!). The type of fish i have in my community lake (in Virginia, if it helps) are bluegill, crappie, small and largemouth bass, channel catfish, and a few walleye. The first time, I didn’t know what I was doing, so i just used a jig head with a grub tail and didn’t catch anything. The second time I used worms with a hook, bobber, and sinker and still didn’t catch anything. The third time I used a variety of spinnerbaits (I have a stained water lake, so i used colorado blades and indiana blades). The fourth and most recent one I first used hook, bobber, sinker, and bread then i didn’t catch anything for a half hour, so then I went to the bait shop and got a dozen small minnows and used those with a hook, bobber, and sinker and still didn’t have any luck. So could anyone tell me what am I doing wrong and explain how to get at least a bluegill. (and is there any way to prevent getting a catfish because I hate the way they look and I’ve heard they have stingers with an irritating venom) Please help me and thanks for your time.
I have an 8lb line with a medium action 6-12lb rod if it helps.
My community lake is not depleted, and many people around me catch a lot of fish. When is the bluegill and bass spawn times and how can I take advantage of them?

oh one other thought… are you sure there is actaully fish in that water your fishing at? maybe the lake is depleted? have you seen someone else there actually catch a fish?

There was a lake in Oregon my brother and I used to fish. He was always more adept at catching trout and I was relegated to the bluegill, crappie, and bull heads – the latter, cut up and used to catch blue gill and carp. In a crunch, water skippers came in handy as well, but occasionally, we would land a catfish which was good. Turned out, the proprietor of the A&W Burger joint half-mile away collected them for her pond, so it was a good trade: food for fish. Sometimes we’d catch two for rootbeer floats. Plain old garden variety worms worked pretty well, as well as any moths we caught near the porch light in the evenings. (I’ve never had any luck with that bright pink bottled stuff, but maybe that’s just me).

A smaller bobber makes less of a splash, and keep your weights at least 2 feet from the hook. If you want to cast and reel, use an orange/black rooster tail with a little bait on the three-prong.

Look around you. You wouldn’t believe how much free bait you live near.
