How to tag a largemouth bass?
I have a pet largemouth bass that we acquired from a pond, and now he’s larger and we would like to put him back in the pond, but we would like to tag him to make sure he doesn’t get eaten till he gets a lot bigger.

the only method of keeping track of fish that ive heard of is by cutting one of their fins
tagging him isn’t going to prevent him from being eaten. cutting off a fin will only weaken him and make him more susceptible to getting eaten. tagging kits are available for purchase or even free from a number of state wildlife offices. l suggest you google up your state fish and game offices or just insert “tagging kit” on google and see the many that come up. the kit would come with instructions on where and how so as not to damage your fish. he’s not a trout that you can just trim the adipose fin.
Many states do not permit tagging of fish in any way other than by the state agency, so if you persist in doing anything like this, you might first want to check the legality before asking the natural resources people to provide you with a tag and applicator. By raising your fish in captivity, you have accustomed him to humans and made him less afraid of people. He will be more likely to respond to them and their offerings as a result of the training your feeding accomplished. If you REALLY want to be sure no one catches him and eats him, you might have to continue keeping him even longer. There again, there may be laws pertaining to that too that you may not want to discuss with a warden, etc. I didn’t write the laws, but I feel you should be aware of what they “might” be be before you get caught up in one of them that could be costly. This is one of the reasons most fish and game agencies stress the importance of people leaving wildlife where they belong…..in the wild. Good luck in your decision making process.
