Give it another few weeks and you’ll be just fine. Its normal for fishing to be slow this time of the year when its just starting to warm up. Also the weather has been weird with rain, cold fronts, warm fronts, and all that. When they bed here in a few weeks youll be able to get hits on about anything you throw. Hands down the best baits to throw are plastic worms and lizards (6-7.5 in). Lizards are the number one threat to the bass guarding the nests after they have laid their eggs. I like the zoom fire tail lizard texas rigged best for this time of the year.

You know, sometimes it’s not the lure or the fisherman that is the cause of a poor catch. Sometimes it is the water temperature or the weather. And sometimes the bass just refuse to cooperate. Just keep going, and you will hit it right at some time or another and slaughter them. Don’t give up! Good luck!

Try a suspending jerkbait fished slowly and with long pauses. You want a suspending model because it will hang in the strike zone for lethargic fish to grab instead of floating back to the surface. However, experiment with the retrieve until the fish give you some positive feedback. Rapala Husky Jerks and X-Raps, Smithwick Rogues, and Lucky Craft Pointers are all good choices for this application. Also, slowly-retrieved plastic worms, tubes, lipless crankbaits, and jig n pigs can take fish. This time of the year in the pre-spawn, try fishing the mouths of creeks leading into the lake, boulders and rip-raps, points and any structures that allow for easy access from deep to shallow water (bass will hang move along those structures to hunt and scout out prospective bedding spots.) Hope this helps you and happy fishing. Tight lines!!
