What is a good lure to catch largemouth bass on during cold water conditions.?

Lately I’ve been trying to catch some fish in my backyard lake but have caught NOTHING. The weather has been a little messed up lately normally around 30 degrees some times jumping to 40, and today it is 62 with a slight overcast I’ve tried spinner-baits plastic worms and even crank-baits.So what else can I try?

The air temp this time of year doen’t have much to do with things until the water starts warming up. It’s the water temp you need to keep an eye on. Bass will bite a jig and frog in the winter but you have to fish it very, very slowly. Often when they hit, you may not feel a thump but rather a mushy feel to the lure when you try to move it. I’d try a black hair jig with a brown #11 pork chunk on the hook. I’d also use one that had a rattle. A good number of jigs come with rattles on them already. Fish it very slow with short hops and a lot of rod shaking without trying to move the bait. If you are fishing crank baits, S=L=O=W is the word. You’ll probably get a bunch of different suggestions, and some may work. Still, if I had to fish only one lure in cold water conditions, it would be a jig and frog.

You’ve tried plastic worms, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits, so they are out of the conversation.

Try some other soft-plastics like crayfish, or lizards fished slowly near the bottom. Dark colors, purple, or black.

Maybe a soft-swimbait, try those in the smaller sizes (4 inch would be good) in a pattern that imitates the bait that the bass feeds upon.

Other than that, i can’t imagine any more good lures for winter.

    Hope i helped ya out.

we have been fishing small lakes and ponds in Pa. after ice out. we had very good luck with live bate. try using large meal worms on light line and small floats with 2 split shots. minnows will work but not as good. we also like to use small buck tail jigs preferably, black 1/4 oz .

I would try a jig and pig combo (black&blue) or a 6″ zoom lizard carolina rig in pumpkin seed.

dropshot your favorite plastic worm for that lake, scent it up, and fish it SLOW.

    good luck. have fun.

well for cold water conditions the best bait to use is the Purple worm. the company that made this worm is called the Worm. you can get it at any outdoors shop. it works really good. i caught a 5 pound bass using it and it was in cold water to. once in a while you have to jig it off the bottom a little bit and then start to reel again. They Are the best lure I have ever used. I hope this answer helps you to catch the fish of your life because it helped me do that.

go back to your plastic worm. try a 4″ in a darker color and slow it way down. waaay down.

  • bassfishinbitch:

Drop shot rig with a 4″ finesse worm. In a dark color of course. And try the float ‘n’ fly rig too. Its killer on deep, lethargic bass.
