When can I start using my top water baits for largemouth bass?

I live in northwest ohio and the temperature has finally reached 65 degrees. I love poppers, jitterbugs and frogs. Is it still to early??

as soon as you see any baitfish working the water is the time to start using your topwaters. especially any schooling shad. watch for flocks of birds. grebes are good locators of shad.

technically topwater can be used year round. even in winter when 80 percent of the fish are deep, a few still patrol shalow. Additionally in California lakes stocked trout attract bass, so topwater lures like lunker plunkers or ripbaits will work.

However, come spring fish should be in less than 15′ of water and often much less making topwater much more effrective.

best use is around schools of baitfish..for things like poppers.

yeah just look for jumps out of the water from baitfish and cast to them annd retrieve, the lures u r using will work well

now, now , and now. but yes, like the first poster said, you can use it year round, and also, at all times of the day and even slightly choppy water. most people think that the water has to be calm, and although it is ideal, its not the only time you have to use them.

Just because your air temperature reached 65 degrees doesn’t mean the water temperature has, and that is the temperature that counts. I would wait till after the spawn before I started fishing topwaters.

Ahh, a little too early for me. Try throwing soft plastics around stumps to get the attention of bass. 4-6″ worms in some sort of dark, but natural color will do fine.

Throw the top-waters late spring-and all through summer.

  • Bobby:

I agree that top water baits can be used at any time, but they will be much more productive once the water warms more. The air temp has very little influence on the fish, the water temp matters.

You can try it see what happens, you may get lucky and catch a few but they will work better when the water warms.

The best times for me have been after they spawn all the way through late summer.

Now. I mean right now. Don’t wait. Now!
