Why is it the bigger largemouth bass seem to get spooked when a lure hits the water in early spring?
I am fishing in small ponds in Maryland, and I can see quite a few larger bass, but the instant a lure hits the water, they scatter. Some of the smaller ones are biting, but none of the big ones I can see near the edges of the water. Does it have to do with the spawn? Any tips would be appreciated

Bass are predators and they prefer ambushing their prey and not expect to be ambushed themselves and this reason is because they eat each other and don’t care. Largemouth Bass are the most hard hitting fresh water fish alive today!
Now as for preventing the spook…try fishing during the windy days and there will be less spooking.
When the bass are starting to make their beds they are not actively feeding. And If the bass are in shallow water, which they have a tendency to do they will be extremely nervous and will scatter at the slightest excuse
No tips, however, your right ~ their in the spawn/spawning

You have to be smart to grow big. They just scatter because they think it is a predator coming up on them. If you can see the beds try throwing a tube jig on the bed (yes, the fish will usually scatter) and then the fish will come back and pick up your lure and as soon as they suck it in set the hook. Or a salamander will work pretty good too since salamanders eat the fish eggs so the bass will try to get rid of it in a hurry….
…honestly it is because you are fishing from the bank…Bass are the major predator in most bodies of water, and are unafraid of things living in the water with them, most of their predators are on the land, so they are afraid of things near or on the bank…when you are fishing from a boat, they usually will not scatter and even will watch you go by without moving…if they are big, they are females or Sows (Bucks, male bass, will not get over 5lbs)…the Sow does not build the bed, the Bucks do, so if you see her shallow it is because she is looking for Bucks to spawn with…she will spawn with several Bucks, but a 10lb female will not spawn with a 1lb Buck…the Bucks guard the bed after she spawns with them…but she will remain in the area and check on the beds to ensure the Buck is still there…so when you are fishing for bedding bass and you find a Buck that is 4lb…catch him off, put him in the live well and leave and come back in a few hours, and she will be sitting on the bed…and if he is a 4lb Buck…think how big she is…hope this helps…
