Would canned sardines (from the store) be used as a bait for largemouth bass or catfish?
I am going fishing tommorow, and want to try a different bait. I know the sardines are salty, but I was wondering if I rinse them off a little and use them as bait (let it sit on the bottom of the lake), if they would work well, anyone ever tried?

yes it would i have done it
i would say yes i think it’s worth a try.wish i was going fishing tomorrow i love to fish.good luck catch a big one.
Largemouth Bass are a “PREDATORY” fish which means that they don’t eat “DEAD” fish they like it Live or wounded. Channel Catfish, the most common of the freshwater catfish species, commonly snacks on Dead/Rotten/Decayed fish matter. That’s why cut-baits work so good. Chicken liver and all those meaty grocery baits are IN MY MIND making the catfish think it’s part of a dead Shad/Shiner/Bluegill/Crappie on the bottom so they scoop it up.
My Point???
Largemouth Bass will probably not take a Dead Bait-Fish/Grocery Store Bait, whereas Catfish will take anything Meaty/Rotten/Bloody. Case dismissed?
If you don’t get it, I am TRYING to say that the Sardines COULD work for catfish.
Lets face it I fished for bass with bread and 2 out of ten it worked, that’s if the bread doesn’t come apart in the water.
Canned sardines, depending on the brand, come apart after a while under water, why not try this at home in the sink? before going fishing.
I would try the steak sardines first, I’ve had more luck with them.
How about taking your sardines and covering them with the soil that is at hand at your fishing area. First hook your sardines then carefully cover them with the soil or sand which ever it might be to make a ball, doesn’t have to be big, just enough to keep the sardines from coming apart quickly, by the time the soil starts coming apart the fish would have heard, smelled and your bait is still hooked.
Works for me.
im not sure about bass but what I do know is that the stinkier your bait the better it attracts catfish, maybe try leaving the sardines out in the hot sun in a tight closed container for a day. THE STINKIER THE BETTER
I don’t see why not, although it may work better for catfish because it’s a stinkier bait. You’ve got the right idea by using live bait; that works best for game fish like bass.
