Best smallmouth bass baitcasting reel.?

I want to get a better bass rod,but on a budget of about $200. I want a St. Croix Mojo Bass with a good reel. The pole is 100. So a good reel for 100.

BPS has their “extreme” rods on sale right now for 70 bucks. that’s $30 off regular price.
pick up one of those and a shimano citica. that will give you a great outfit right in your price range.
l have three of the bps extreme rods in their flipping stick models (of different weights). one for tossing worms, one for topwaters and one for heavier stuff. while not my absolutely best rods, they get plenty of use and have always given me their best flawless service.
the citica fishes so close to the curado thet the difference is negligible. load it with 8 or 10lb mono, stick it on that extreme and you will have a quality outfit that will work as well and last as long as a $500 outfit.

I would highly, highly, highly recommend a Team Daiwa SOL for Smallmouth fishing. But those retail for $250. If you wait long enough, Tackle Warehouse will probably (not 100% sure) put them on sale like they did the Viento and Fuego. It’ll cut the cost all the way down to around $140 I would guess. That reel would be SWEET and would cast light-lures almost as well as a comparible spinning reel.

But you said $200 for an outfit and I can understand that you can’t purchase things that expensive, I know I can’t.

I like The Wormist’s suggestion of both the rod and reel.

But, I would prefer to pick the Mojo, so if you could stretch your budget to $220 than you could get a 7′ M “plastics” St. Croix Mojo Bass and a Shimano Citica 200e. I would love to have that combo.

    That outfit would be SWEET!

NO! Check out Aqua Superstore (google it) and they are selling the Citica E’s right now for $95. That’s nearly $30 off original price. You can also find the Citica reels on eBay for the same price. Now you can buy the Mojo and Citica for $200.

Abu Garcia and Berkley have some nice spinning combos out at very nice prices… $40-70. I bought a Lightning Rod paired up with a Cardinal for $70 that i’m using for soft plastics, and a light setup for trout and panfish (it’s a light version of the same reel with a Berkley Cherrywood rod).

Quantum usually has some decent combos out at decent prices for bait casters, although i usually buy their reels and pair them up with a better rod… Dick’s is carrying a new line of rods (i think by Field and Stream) that come in a variety of styles based on presentations… they’re priced at $60-70 if i recall (rod alone), and seem like quality rods, tho i have not purchased and used one yet myself.
