black dots in my fish filet?
there are small black dots in the filets from a smallmouth bass that i just caught in a stream in upstate new york. they are about 2mm in diameter, and egg shaped. is this safe to eat?

Im not exactly sure what those are from but ive had them on fish ive cought a number of times. I ate all those fish and i didnt get sick
Probably blood spots or bruises or scars. sometimes is the fish gets in a fight or whatever it gets bruised and those turn black.
pick one out with a knife point. it may be a cyst containing a parasite. if it is, just pick ‘em all out and cook and eat the fish. even if you ate one, once it is cooked it couldn’t do anything anyway. probably couldn’t if alive. they just look bad.
the dots may just be some of the normal coloration of the flesh. l have never eaten a smallmouth but many rock bass l have gotten had evenly spaced spots in the flesh that were just…spots…l hope.
my father-in-law regularly makes ceviche out of white croaker that almost all the time have worms of some sort. never had any ill affects.
I think you are talking about a little black parasite. I have seen a lot of them in bottom feeding fish. You can pick them out if you wish but I never have. Once they are cooked there seems to be no ill effect. I’ve been eating them for 60 years and I’m still kicking. I wouldn’t worry about it.
