First Time Smallmouth Fishing?
Up here in Rhode Island, smallmouth bass were basically wiped out by the intoduction of the largemouth in the last 30 years…. (I’ve fished for 15 years now and never seen one, or heard of one being caught.) But a friend of mine found a hidden river in a few miles into the woods and caught a bunch of smallies last week.
I need some tips, advice, etc. on catching smallies since this will be my first time. As of right now I plan on using some rooster tails and also a size 5 rapala jointed.
What other lures should I consider and also what should I look for as far as geological features to cast at?

I would use a small, wacky rigged Stick-O worm by BPS – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_95619____SearchResults Depending on the water clarity, if the water is clear get the white looking colors, if it’s murky try the black looking ones. The best hook i have found for the wacky rig is a Gamakatsu Circle Hook – http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_19936____SearchResults
Other than that, i favor those rooster tails you use. I like the 1/8 oz. size in white.
Happy fishing.
Rooster tails are effective. Look for any kind of structure or drop offs. Early morning or late afternoon is good for smallmouth. They like rocks, felled trees anyplace you might find largemouth and bluegill or crappie. You will find smallies.
maybe a mepps spinner as well.
Float ‘N’ Fly.
