Largemouth or smallmouth bass?

Which one fights hardest. I hear a lot of people say smallies but largemouth get bigger. does it even out? Maybe you could give me a ratio.

  • Grand Master BasserĀ®:

Smallmouth do fight harder than a largemouth, eventhough they’re smaller. They’re a lot more acrobatic fighters, also.

Pound for pound, a smallmouth wins. If you take a trophy-sized smallmouth bass, let’s say an even ten-pounder (that’s a HUGE fu*kin’ smallie!) and take a largemouth bass of the same size (not huge, but still a decent fish), again, pound for pound, the smallmouth is going to outrun, outjump, and overall outfight the largemouth.

Only bass that I fish are river smally’s ~ as GMB mentioned it’d have to be the Smallmouth. Only my opinion (and his) but, am sure there will be others that feel the same;)… < * { {{ > <

Basser said it. A Smallmouth fights much harder when it comes to pound for pound. As you said, Largemouths do get bigger so obviously an 8 pound largemouth is going to fight harder than a 4 pound Smallmouth. On the other hand, if you were to get a 4 pound Smallmouth and a 4 pound Largemouth, the Smallmouth will more times than not be the harder fighting fish.

  • BOBBER:

    To me small mouth do.

  • Cole:

As stated above, pound-for-pound the smallmouth is the greater fighter. Largemouth like to swim to cover and smallmouth like to swim in every direction and will do anything to try and get the hook out of their mouths including jumping and thrashing around. Largemouth bass do tend to get bigger than a smallie but overall smallies fight harder. There aren’t any ratios I know of. Good luck fishin’!

  • Tucker M:

Pound for pound river smallies fight a hell of allot harder then large mouths, honest to god!

  • Fisher_King:

GMB nailed the Q. ( I want to go fishing with him where he’s catching those 10 LB Smallies- lol)

Smallmouth ARE stronger/faster fighters than Largemouth, BUT, they rarely reach over 8Lb’s.

Still, I’d rather catch ten 5-6LB Smallies than two 8-10LB Largies!

    TU to GMB- Nice answer.

  • trunorth:

Pound for pound you won’t find a better fighter than a smallie.
