i caught six bass in one day out fishing but the largest smallmouth was 23 in and about 4-5 lbs but it had a strang hump on its back simmalar to the hump a carp or koi would have but that was the only carp like characteristics it had red eyes, jaw went to the middle of the eye and it bit on a repela floating minnow why does it have a lump is it even a bass?

Like people some fish have deformities.
Get hurt when they are fry or who knows, I have caught both SM, and LM with a bend in their spine right before the rear tail.
SM do not have red eyes, Red Eye bass do tho.
Not knowing where you live so not sure if they are in your area.

Smallmouth have golden and red eyes, I just think that is a species trait, or it might be what they call a Kentucky bass. As far as the hump on it’s back, that’s called getting shoulders, & it is a trait of the bigger fish. I read somewhere that it takes 10 to 12 years for smallmouth to reach the 6, to 6 &1/2 lb size. I guess that’s why the Illinois DNR changed the catch/keeper rate, according to size. They also have imposed a ban on the catch/keeper limit during the spring thru June? Not sure on the dates though. There are usually photos of the most popular species displayed within your states fishing regulations booklet, so see if you can match your fish to one of those.
