nearly any good minnow imitation will work well, wooly buggers in back, brown and olive, crayfish flies are also really good.
Good luck
You can use poppers also. Smallies hit them around here like crazy.
I actually just answered the same question for “bogie”, so I will just copy it for you……………………………………..
The WoolyBoogas will work great and probably would be all you would need as the smallies can’t seem to resist them, don’t forget the olive green pattern as this one kills.
You could also try a deer hair Bass bug in the same colors as these also work well. I have also had really good luck with nymphing just a foot or two down with some weight forward line and a “Zug Bug”, their great cause’ some of them are slightly weighted with a wire wrapping which makes a big difference in the bug “hanging” where you want it to. Hope this helped and good luck on your trip!
this question gives me a forum to tell you all this: I caught my personal best smallie today..it was 20 1/2″ and about 5 1/2 #..now i say this because i caught it on a fly I call Bass Candy..It’s a Lead eye streamer made from a zonker strip with some silicone rubber legs added.I’ve added a link to it below..i wish i could post a pic of it but i only had my cell phone cam..but at least i got a pic with that..
