Trolling for Smallmouth bass?
I’m fishing on a lake in northern Wisconsin. I plan to canoe with a few poles out the back at about 10 ft deep of water (the weed line). I’ve never done this before, so I don’t really know what kind of bait/rig would be. Oh yeh, the water is crystal clear. There’s a good chance that I would also be fishing over sand b/c when there are no weeds, teh bottom is total sand. I don’t have a lot of stuff to pick from, so multiple suggestions would be great. I do have lots of fake worms with twister tails on the end, in case those would work. Thanks!

I’ll do my best here.
first off every body of water is different so you must determine what the bass have been eating. if your in one area and you see loads of tadpoles than you know that frogs are in that area and it would be wise to choose a frog over a worm.
now if you see little blue gills or shiners than you would want to mimic the bait fish the best you can. so for the shiners I would want to use a single jointed rapala with black paint on top and silver on bottom. for the blue gills I would toss a sand color rattling crank bait.
then you have to find out where these fish biting, if it is clear than they might not want to come out of the cover and rather stick to the weeds. if that is the case than you know not to use any top water baits. so you might want to switch to a weighted worm, rig it weedless, and bounce it in the weeds.
but if you see the fish are aggressive and rising out of the weed cover than you might want to switch off to a spinner bait and run it over the top of the weed cover.
a lot depends of the behavior of the fish and that depends on weather conditions, food source availability, etc……
so it is up to you to read what the fish are responding to the best. if you see a lot of bait fish in the water than try your best to mimic them with you lures. but if the fish feed a lot than they will not be interested in a fast moving bait, they prefer a wounded looking on that is twitching and easy to get. and if they still don’t come out to get it than twitch it right in the weed line and be ready.
I would suggest that you gather up a list of lures that you feel would best mimic the normal food sources of the bass and make sure you can get them heavy so you can cast out far and cover a lot of water with little movement on that canoe. than just change it up depending upon what you see.
if you find some lily pads and you see the bass jumping out of the water than you know to toss a weedless frog up there and just twitch it every 2 minutes or so.
if your over the sandy bottom and you see that the shiners are rolling down there and the bass are coming out of the weed cover. than you know to put your shiner lure down there and twitch it near the weed line.
the best peace of advice I can give you is if you find the fish are aggressive than it is best to use a fast moving loud bait like a rattle trap or bleeding spinner bait. if they are holding tight than use slower moving baits and make them appear to be wounded.
good luck, be patient and have fun.
this is a way to fish for smallies I have never heard of. In the bays and even out in the harbor I have seen kayak ing guys troll a crankbait while paddleing but in all my years I have never heard of trolling for small mouths. Good luck.
