using the moon to bass fish?

i fish for smallmouth bass. it says that when the moon rises and sets those are the two best fishing times. how do i know what time the moon rises and sets? can i see it in the sky? does the moon rise and set at randon times of the day and changes time everyday? what about the full moon new moon thing? do i fish on a full moon new moon night? or when the full moon new moon rises and sets? what about other moon phases like half moon and like when a 1/4 of the moon is showing like a banana do i still fish the moon rise and moon set for those moon phases?

my gps i have has a fish/hunt moon phase thing that tells the best fishing and hunting time but idk how to use it. it will give me a option to put in a location i have in the gps and it will then give me a choice to choose the date and then will tell me 2 sets of time like
excellent:
11:15am to 1:15pm
11:35pm to 1:35am
then has the good fishing/hunting time witch looks like this
good:
5:15am to 7:15am
5:35pm to 7:35pm
witch time is witch? is it even accurate?

also has a feature that tells when the sun rises and sets and when the moon rises and sets and also shows how the moon phase will look.

please please try your best to answer my question as best and descriptive as you can please and thank you
i know that barometers play a roll and that any day is good but please just try answering my question not requesting that i fish any day

This is what the gps is telling you. Each day there is a major and a minor feeding period. The only difference between the two it that the minor feeding period does not last as long as the major one. And the excellent day will be better then a day that is good. But the better guide is the calender in your gps that tells you the best days of the month to hunt and fish.
Now the best advice is to ignore all those things because local weather conditions are a greater barometer of good or bad fishing then the moon phases or times.

Simply get an Almanac and it will tell u when the moon rises and sets and it will also tell u the best times to fish and the best days to fish. I trust what the Almanac says about alot of stuff, like when to plant your garden, when to have a tooth pulled, et. The Almanac tells a ton of stuff about several different things, including fishing.

The moon has nothing to do with catching fish

According to the originator of the Solunar Theory (John Alden Knight) the best fishing times – Major Periods – occur when the moon is directly overhead or directly underfoot and last several hours. The Minor Periods occur when the moon is setting and rising and last half as long as the Major Periods. The intensity of these maj and min periods also varies throughout the month with the best occuring at full and new moons (this is when the combined gravitational forces of the sun and moon are strongest) and the weakest occurring at first quarter and last quarter moons.

There is one iPhone App that is going to be released the week of April 12, 2010 that is pretty comprehensive in terms of including all the important solunar table info. It is called iSolunar Hunting & Fishing Times — it has an informative website that details how to interpret the different solunar values ( go to http://i-solunar.com ) I have all the other solunar iPhone apps and this one looks like it is going to be the best one by far.

    Good luck

DD & Chasing have answered your Q. (Thumbs up guys!)

On a side note- Don’t plan on doing ANY night fishing until the water temps are (at least) in the high 50′s – low 60′s.

DD is right- Barometer and local weather conditions will affect your Smallie fishing over Moon phases by about 95%.

Sounds like you’ve just got a new GPS and your itchin’ to use EVERY feature!

Understand, Freshwater fish are affected by Moon phases but not as much as Saltwater fish, (due to Tidal influence).

Trying to fish the “requested hot Moon phases” is (for lack of a better word) a joke. Your new GPS might be able to give you the “best” Moon Phases for fishing (but like Chasing mentioned) the Almanac can do that too, (and will generally be more accurate). It’s common knowledge that 3 days before the Full Moon and 3 days after is when fishing is most affected by the Moon.

And your GPS is not calculating in other factors like Weather, Barometer, Light Conditions, Etc.

Don’t get “bogged down” in all the “bells & whistles” on your GPS!

Your GPS is a “tool” for marking structure and hot fishing spots.

    That’s it!

If you purchased your GPS because of this feature you got “sold”. Trying to figure in Moon phases for a fishing trip is an Almanac issue.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news…….(and I’m not trying to instigate a fight!)

I hope this helps you?!!! Good luck on your next fishing trip.
