Try ether a roostertail spinner or a jig with a gulp minnow.

Give the old hook and sinker method a try. Just throw a baby crawler on your hook, cast out, and reel it in with slow, steady bursts. I’ve tried all kinds of things and nothing seems to work better consistently. If crawlers don’t work, give different fake worms a try.

When i’m fishing for “old bucket mouth” and come across large underwater boulder I switch to a plastic crawdad and work it like a plastic worm for small mouth. This has worked well for me. Let it sink to the bottom and set for a short time then pick it up and let it settle again. Most hits will happen on the drop. Good luck.

    Baits:
    Live crayfish.
    Live minnows.
    Live gobies.
    Live sculpins.

    Smallmouth like their food live.

    Lures:
Hair or marabou jigs fished on the Float ‘N’ Fly rig.
    Plastic tube baits.
    Plastics imitating a crawdad.
Plastics imitating a goby or sculpin.

The best baits I have used for smallmouth are plastic worms or crawdads and bass jigs. Plastic worms work great for smallmouth. I like to carolina rig them when fishing deeper slopes (usually around 20-25 ft) and texas rig them when fishing weeded areas. Bass jigs work excellent at any depth and most have weed guards attached also. Put a small trailer on the back and the fish won’t be able to resist.

Crank baits and Rapalas work excellently also.
