    Dumb answer but true.
Like all fish , they eat what they want ,when they want to & depending on location ,it changes from pond to pond / lake to lake. & what is living in the surrounding water plants.
Crickets. small frogs, grubs, worms, minnows. live or artificial & spinners of the “right” kind.
Have had some luck w/ artificial minnows, worms & silver or gold Mepps # 1&2
    Ask locals what works ..where.
    Best regards

Crayfish >>> #1 near rocky bottom areas
    other fish
    night crawlers

I’ve done well in slow moving rivers with a small red worm with a split shot…

spinners work great too – mepps black algia with either orange or yellow dots

    small spinnerbaits work well too

Hellgramites and crawfish are two of the best baits you can use for smallmouth. Although they will hit just about anything in the water they think they can eat. They love shad and minnows of all sorts. Will readily hit topwater lures or soft plastics fished along the bottom. Tight lines!!!

crayfish on rockey bottoms and worms on anything else

number one favorite food is crawfish (crawdads) without exception, knowing this going in any kind of lure that is made to immulate the crawfish will certainly work. find or locate structure on the bottom rock piles seem to hold large numbers of them. chartreuse colors seem to be pro fishermens favorite color but lime green to dark green in spring and orange to brown in fall. with the colors in mind you will be using lures that immulate crawfish tube lures, large grubs, jigs and trailers, fat (large curly tail) worms. Even smaller crankbaits if minnows are jumping out of the water the fish under them are scaring them out. switch to shad raps and other cranks matching both the baits size and color.

Secret # 119) the crawdad is young and greenish (softshell) in spring and as it ages during the year its shell hardens and turns ornage red brown (harder) and larger as well

jordan the will eat any thing that a large mouth will eat we use the same lures to catch them both

  • redsoxfan2418:
